Marat Safin advanced to the quarter-finals of the Countrywide Classic for the first time after defeating Switzerland's George Bastl in three sets. The number three seed from Russia eventually came through 6-2 2-6 6-4 in a match which lasted two hours. Safin served 17 aces in reaching the last eight but it was an unexpected struggle against Bastl, who is ranked just 255th in the world. Safin appeared on his way to a comfortable win after racing through the first set in 25 minutes. But Bastl took the final four games of the second set and was poised to grab an early break in the deciding third before Safin fought back from 15-40 down. Safin took the lead for the first time since the opening set when he broke Bastl in the seventh game before saving three break points to move 5-3 ahead. He closed out the match in his next service game. Next up for Safin will be seventh seed Hyung-Taik Lee of Korea, who advanced after South Africa's Wesley Moodie retired with a back injury. Lee was leading 6-2 3-0 when Moodie called it quits after 40 minutes.

;D ;D davai maratik!!!!!!!!!!!!concerning the next opponent, believe me that's been kind of a month that i notice him and read his name everywhere and tell to myself"well maybe he's gonna play marat" and here he is !really weird! and no i don't have any idea about what could happen! but just as the two previous ones let's take it easyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!! hehe ;D no offence to Marat's opponent, never ever noticed this Lee guy, even he is the best Asian male tennis player. Coming from a potato faming town in South Korea, 6 times Seoul challangers' winner lol 1.80M tall---that's super tall for an Asian (maybe too tiny for Ruskis, i am taller than him on high heels ) Well, i sincerely hope Marat crash up this muscleless "Kim Chi" and make a break through! All of us have been sarvoring for so long to him win a title. Davai Maratika.... ;D

Well Hellan I don't mean to sound super pessimistic (me being the founder of the idiotic optimism movement and all ;D ) but today Marat played a number 255 in the world and allowed himself to be pushed to three sets So Lee is a dangerous opponent being no 42 and playing much more aggressive and interesting tennis than Bastl But I am hoping for the same outcome as you ;D

We never know with Marat 255th player was tough, : Guccione is higher ranked and he wasn't easy either. It's all in his head and maybe the more dangerous/known the player the more focused Marat gets... I think he will do fine kisses

yay for 2 in a row again! woot! even though they've both been 3 sets, at least they've ended up in Marat's favor (glad that it didn't end up to TBs again) hope for good things on Friday (optimistic, but not overly so ) .... and Friday is the start of TV coverage here - yes! ;D go Marat!

sincerely, dangerous or not, Marat has to beat the guy! coz we all know what Marat is capable of that's why we support him so hard, if he wants to be credible toward the guys ahead him he gotta arrive to Montreal with a GOOD preparation! but still don't expect too much and let the guy take his marks to finally re-impose his mark and himself to the others and scare them like he used before!Grrr!
