SHOCK DEFEAT FOR SAFIN AS VERDASCO REIGNS SUPREME ON THE SECOND DAY OF THE BOODLES CHALLENGEPress Release, 20/06/07 The world number 40, Fernando Verdasco, pulled off a surprise win over former US and Australian champion, Marat Safin, on the second day of The Boodles Challenge at Stoke Park Club in Buckinghamshire. The Spaniard won an exciting tiebreak decider to kick off the day's matches acting as the perfect précis to another feature of the day: Andy Murray's unveiling of his Madame Tussaud's body double in front of an expectant crowd on the practice courts. Fernando Verdasco commented on his win: “I was happy to come through today's match with a victory. It's great to play on the grass here at Boodles and I felt good. Safin is a fantastic player so it's good to get a result like that to take me in to the next match." Marat Safin commented: “I had a bad day but I'll be back later in the week. I love the place so I'll look forward to it. It's great preparation for Wimbledon and gives me a chance to play a few matches here.” In the second match of the day, Igor Andreev (RUS) dispatched fellow countryman Evgeny Korolev 6-4, 6-2 to progress to the next stage of the tournament. The final match saw a win for the battling German Nicolas Kiefer against the charismatic American Vince Spadea. Kiefer has not played much competitive tennis in the last year and this was only his third match back since a wrist injury in 2006. Results from Wednesday 20th June: • F. Verdasco (SPA) bt M. Safin (RUS), 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 • I. Andreev (RUS) bt E. Korolev (RUS), 6-4, 6-2 • N. Kiefer (GER) bt V. Spadea (USA), 7-6, 7-5

A Boodles Challenge Report : Day 2 Written by Jay Jarrahi Wednesday, 20 June 2007 Only a few more days before the beginning of Wimbledon and preparation for some of the top names in the game continued at the Boodles Challenge. First up on Stadium Court saw two-time Grand Slam winner Marat Safin facing Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.
Playing in front of a near capacity crowd, Safin was able to assert himself first and took the set 6-4. However, Verdasco did not wilt and with the benefit of some outstanding serving held his service games with relative ease before gaining the crucial break to win the set 6-3 and take the encounter to a match tie-break. Verdasco dominated the rest of the proceedings and ran out a 10-4 victor in the match tie-break. Afterwards, despite being somewhat downbeat, Safin looked ahead to his future matches at the Boodles Challenge in preparation for Wimbledon.
“It’s nice to play here and it’s going to be good to play more matches (exhibitions) and have good preparation.” Verdasco moves on to the last four of the tournament and will face Robin Soderling.
The second match on court featured two more Russians, Igor Andreev and Evgeny Korolev. After an even first set, it was Andreev who broke at 5-4 to take the set 6-4. Andreev began to exert his control on the match and his forehand as ever was very prominent. Korolev showed his inexperience at times and the match quickly got away from him with Andreev victorious 6-4, 6-2. Feeling that he is nearing 100% after returning from injury late last year, Andreev set his sights on breaking the top 20 for the first time in his career as the season progresses. He cited the Davis Cup tie in Chile as the few days that really made him feel he had recovered his game and confidence following his absence from the tour. Andreev now meets David Nalbandian in the other semi-final tomorrow.

It is good for Marat to have some practice on grass and it’s not important to win these matches. The only thing that matters is Wimbledon.

Marat will play an "exhibition match" (not that this is an exhibition tournament in the first place... ) against Gael Monfils tomorrow, third match of the day. Sounds like fun, I hope he sees it the same way

Although I'd use the exhibition match as 'practice' to try out some shots, the Big Yin should still try for some serious competitive tennis. Practice volleying, the lob and getting down to shots. Forget about baseline tactics - you know them inside out (but keep the heid, and the ball in, when it keeps coming back) ;D The weather will no doubt mean that the court speed/bounce will keep changing dramatically. And remember the most crucial point, I have hard cash on you. Don't let me down. Checked out the weather for Wimbles. Chucking down on Saturday (when I arrive), chucking down on Sunday and then sunshine and showers on Monday, and cloud on Tuesday. I'd settle for cloud for the whole week (being Scottish) and then I wouldn't get my usual third-degree burns (being Scottish). I despise being smothered in factor 50 suncream. It never bloody works on me. And it makes my eyes run constantly. And it makes me moan more (being Scottish). I feel like a greasy chip. Slap some vinegar on me and I'm sorted. Fun holiday in the offing girls. Will do the updates and get the photos to Oor Annie. ;D
