Davydenko ends Safin resurgence Davydenko beat Safin for the first time in three attempts in 2006 Nikolay Davydenko cut short Marat Safin's comeback on clay at the Estoril Open, defeating his fellow Russian 4-6 6-1 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals.
With the match level at one set all, the Russians swapped breaks in the decider before Davydenko, the second seed, took the fifth and seventh games.
Justin Gimelstob produced another upset when he beat Chile's seventh seed Nicolas Massu 2-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-4.
The American's last success on clay was seven years ago in Florida.
Gimelstob will now face Spain's Albert Portas, who beat French fourth seed Gael Monfils 3-6 7-6 (3) 6-4.
Safin had already beaten Davydenko twice in Dubai and Indian Wells this season.
The former world number one has been back on the circuit less than two months after a serious knee injury.
But Safin was still dissatisfied with his lack of consistency, especially with the French Open at the end of the month.
"How can I be satisfied after a score like that?" he said.
"I had chances and didn't take them and I had so many errors.
"I have to play, practise and put in the work. Something just has to change."

Thanks for all the pictures, I'd like to make a flicker book of them all! I'm glad that kolya won and sorry that marat lost the way he did. the ATP tour is rather unforgiving particularly if you don't give it priority. perhaps he had too long a gap between tournments or too distracted in between them? Who knows? Anyway i hope he enjoyed his time in Moscow and is ready to start thinking about tennis again, which is possibly all he needs. Best wishes everyone!!
