Loving the round robin set up, means I get 3 whole days of Marat whether he wins [which he will ;D] or loses. ;D ;D ;D ;D At first, I hated that new set up, now that you mention it, not anymore... Go MaRat!!!

Oh! I absolutely hate RR!!!! Even if I get Marat everyday for 6 months... RR is really annoying. Not to mention they are complicating tennis when it´s not necessary. RR have so many cons I don´t even want to start enumerating them.... You lose, you´re out, that´s tennis.... whether you´re Safin, Federer, Hewitt or Diego Hartfield.

I am sorry to be rude, but I really don;t like the idea of RR.,,. even you watch more matches of your fav player, the downside is, it changes the nature of tennis--the feeling of unperdictable, anything could happen magic has lost...... RR makes me feel like talking to those complicated, fussy patients at work...... Is tennis going to follow football pattern??? I am not a big fan of it...sorry

Now that I read pixievodka´s post...., I never meant to be rude..., I just post like that LMAO ;D ;D And, pixievodka, I´m not a big fan of football (you meant soccer right? but I know about it because....., well, I live in Argentina ;D ;D ) either, but I wouldn´t compare both sports. Tennis is an individual sport, and football is a team sport, totally different in my humble opinion. I would compare tennis to boxing rather than football, for example... Please, don´t take this literally LMAO Of course tennis and boxing are different, but in this matter I think the parallelism with boxing is more useful than the one with football (or any other team sport). Anyway, I´m not a big fan of RR either...., not at all...

i don't think that is fair at all. kooyong is not a competition. you don't win anything. not money, nor a trophy so complaining about how it is run is completely a non issue. i mean, lau, you said that if you lose you lose. yes, but if you aren't playing for anything how could you lose in the first place??! they are handed the old trophy from the ao - but they don't keep it, or get a replica or get their name engraved...! the only way kooyong (and therefore the history of the ao - which matters a lot to people in melbourne and tennis ppl in australia) can keep going is if they hold something there and only having one court with seats - the rest are all for the members except for the three grass courts that are for training and warm-up - that is the only way they can do it. heaven knows they need the money as much as anyone else! the decent players would not bother with it if they weren't guaranteed three games at least because there is nothing else to offer them. no prizes. you get a congrats. that's it. if you are talking about adelaide that is different again, yes it is a comp but it is being moved next year (or is it the year after next?) so they were trying something radical to see if they can save the comp. sorry! but you got my back up then guys! i love kooyong and if you had been there i think you would have a different view. at kooyong it is either round robin or nothing at all. there is no financially viable way toherwise for it to keep running. if tennis in australia got to the point of no kooyong then i would break down. isn't there something nice about the boutique places where the players are accesseble, the tennis is pretty good and the tickets prices are almost non-existent (plus the best lemon lime and bitters in the world!)

personnaly i'd say RR is ok for exhibitions and only a few times in the year, but for the main part of the season, everything should be in the classical way...

Although I haven't got the faintest idea of the impact they will have on fans and I don't know what effectively they will bring to tennis, I am among those who think that it is something good that players can have the possibility to lose one match but still be in the tournament. Less pressure is on them and, as for Marat, time running out for him is now one of his biggest problem, I guess. The more top players compete the better play we fans see on-court.I think it's a lot more interesting and exciting when we have the chance to see someone different stir things up sometimes. It's one of the things we would love about going to tournaments, because we never get to see most of the players on tv. It's great fun to discover players that the media hasn't promotioned yet. I think this is the only positive part of this set up. The saddest part to me of this is having all the Masters finals this year be only best 2 out of 3 sets which is CRAP! It completely changes the challenge of the final match! Say goodbye to those great magic final showdowns. (Rome, Montecarlo, TMS Madrid)... How is elimination of five-set finals suppose to reduce strain on the players? It's only one match, and only two players get affected. They'll spare them of maybe having to play 2 extra hours of tennis, but that's it. In case of Hamburg and Paris the scheduling is not the only issue. Clay of Rome and Monte Carlo plays a lot more like RG than Hamburg, so I don't see how playing it can benefit a top player after they've already made the adjustment. Same for Paris, why play on carpet when the Masters Cup is played on a hardcourt. Thank God Grand Slams is not under ATP Jurisdiction. *Sorry for going OFF TOPIC, mods.

Fair point. I was talking about official tournaments really. I don´t really care that much about exhos, to be honest They could run it any way they want... They are nice, I watch them..., I adore some of them, but lets face it..., the results in exhos shouldn´t be taken seriously. And if you ever were worried about Tennis Australia having financial problems and not running Kooyong for that reason..., that will never happen as long as they have a Slam (and a whole tour in Australia!!!). They might not run Kooyong but not for that reason. Summarizing...,for me personally..., RR (in official tennis tournaments) sucks The more top players compete the better play we fans see on-court.I think it's a lot more interesting and exciting when we have the chance to see someone different stir things up sometimes. It's one of the things we would love about going to tournaments, because we never get to see most of the players on tv. It's great fun to discover players that the media hasn't promotioned yet. I think this is the only positive part of this set up. Exactly the contrary will happen. RR doesn´t guarantee more TV broadcasting time in any way. And, it will be much harder for new players to earn points and receive more attention. The ones with better ranking will have more opportunities, the ones fighting their way to the top will have less..., and lets not talk about players coming for 3rd world countries, with less sponsors and support...., much more harder. I don´t want to enumerate the reasons here, because we are going too off topic...., but I (or you) can create a special thread for this topic here guyfromrussia.proboards48.com/index.cgi?board=Dinarafor example EDIT: Or maybe a special thread in the tournaments forum.....? But I think it´s better to have a special thread for it apart from any tournament thread...., me thinks.... Wherever you think is appropriate

yeah lau a thread for contravertial topics!!! i think round robin is great.....thats all i have to say.....i am too tired today to make contraverial statements and i dont have a clue about the pros or cons and someone ???asked earlier in the thread if kooyong or AO was being played on UK television....Kooyong no!!! it will probably be shown on eurosport tv though if u have sky or cable!! As for the AO on UK TV.....the only matches shown are the weekend matches on Grandstand.......so sat 20th and sun 21st and also the mens and females finals the following weekend are always shown too!!!! BUT saying..... that if andy Murray makes it past round 4 then they might selectively put his matches on or at least repeats late at night!!!!!! ;D ;D But other than that u should be able to buy AO subscription on www.eurosport.com which is what i will do and then u can watch whatever matches u want over the net and at whatever time too which is handy if ur not an insominiac!!!!!!

I was thinking more in a thread specially for RR or for the changes the ATP want to make in the tour rather than one for controversial topics in general... ;D ;D

I don´t know what happens to me today....., I´m probably bored ;D ;D ;D

For purely selfish reasons I LOVE ROUND ROBIN at Kooyong!!! Anywhere else I really don't give a .......... Just to put two cents worth in [and a seperate thread would be a good idea for friendly debate ]. I'm with mackiemaid [another raw nerve hit], Kooyong is an institution that for better or worse should stay. My love of tennis and infatuation for tennis players, Mats Wilander, Stefan Egberg started there. First they were forced to change the dates of the AO and then forced off grass [which Kooyong was famous for] because all the top players said they wouldn't come. We got Melbourne Park out of it [not a bad thing] but Kooyong was left to languish to the cashed up, bored housewifes of Toorak [and the hopefull little kids, like me, who falsely thought they had a chance at the 'big time']. Any tennis played at Kooyong is a good thing. I love the fact we get to see all players for 3 out of the 4 days and that it is such a relaxed tournament and club. The players treat it as a warm up for the AO, without the stress of Adelaide, Sydney or Auckland [the exception of Rog, he doesn't have an off switch]and you have easy access to the players [ ;D], watching them warm up, walking to/from courts without 100's of body guards etc.....................SO LONG LIVE KOOYONG AND ROUND ROBIN.
I think that was more than 2 cents worth, sorry
7 days to go , bring on the strawberries and cream, defeaning cicadas..............arh Kooyong................
