RODDICK OVERPOWERS SAFINAndy Roddick booked his place in the fourth round of the Australian Open late on Friday night when he overcame Marat Safin 7-6 2-6 6-4 7-6.
Roddick took control of the third-round match when he stormed through the first-set tiebreak 7-2 and - despite Safin levelling at one set all - kept his composure to win on his first match point in the fourth set tiebreak again by seven points to two.
"When I saw the draw I said 'no not me'," Roddick said of the prospect of facing 2005 champion Safin in the third round.
"Last time he was here he was holding up the trophy. I knew I would have to play well or I'd be going home."
The first set went with serve until 3-3 when Safin broke to love. But Roddick was not to be outdone and broke back immediately before forcing the tiebreak and sealing the set at first opportunity.
But Safin quickly raced out to a 4-0 lead in the second set and although Roddick managed to get one break back the 26-year-old Russian broke again to clinch the set.
The third set went with serve and little drama until Safin cut his finger while diving across the court for a volley before play was stopped while he received treatment.
Safin returned to hold serve for 4-4 but with another tiebreak looming Roddick received some good fortune when a netcord helped him gain a break of before the 24-year-old held to love to seal the set.
There was another delay when rain began to fall on Rod Laver while the roof - which had been two thirds closed already - was shut and the court dried.
Safin, however, was not convinced the court was dry enough to continue and - when the officials ordered him to continue - received a warning for an audible obscenity.
From there Safin failed to recover his composure arguing with the umpire throughout the rest of the match.
Roddick held three break points for a 5-4 lead but Safin saved them all before forcing the second tiebreak of the match during which the American again seemed to hold all the power sealing victory when Safin dumped a backhand into the net.
"This is a tough slam," Roddick added.
"You come out and get matches like this and to get through a tough one like this is what it's all about."
SAFIN TEMPER FLARES AGAINMarat Safin once again hit the self-destruct button on Friday when he sulked, screamed and shrieked his way out of the Australian Open.
During an explosive third-round showdown with Andy Roddick, the combustible Russian's anger once again boiled over as he lambasted tournament referee Wayne McKewen for making him play on what he considered a wet surface.
The match was briefly interrupted because of rain and once the roof had been closed on the Rod Laver Arena, the Russian let rip because the court had not been wiped dry to his satisfaction.
As Roddick took up his place on court, the Russian stubbornly sat rooted to his chair. Even when McKewen came up and ordered him to play on, the Russian continued to protest loudly.
After what seemed like an eternity, and with the growing possibility of being defaulted from the match, the Russian got up and completed the game but refused to shut up.
"This guy (McKewen) comes in and says it's okay. He has no idea... he's never played tennis in his life," Safin yelled at French umpire Pascal Maria.
The heated exchange ended with Safin swearing at the umpire which earned the Russian a warning for audible obscenity.
The mutterings did not stop there.
He continued to let his frustrations known during the changeovers, glaring up at Maria from his courtside chair.
Maria soon turned out to be the target of Safin's next tirade.
The umpire was left red-faced after a call he overruled at 1-1 in the fourth set was challenged by Safin. When Hawk-eye technology proved Safin right, the Russian roared his delight and defiantly stared at the umpire.
After completing the game, there was no stopping the 26-year-old.
"If you're not sure, don't call it," he raged at Maria.
"You see what's gonna happen? I cannot argue with you as you have all the power."
After battling the officials and Roddick for three hours and 12 minutes, the fiery Russian finally exited the arena, beaten 7-6 2-6 6-4 7-6.
SAFIN FINED FOR AUDIBLE OBSCENITYMarat Safin was fined $2000 for audible obscenity after he swore at the umpire during his third-round defeat by American sixth seed Andy Roddick.
The Russian lost his temper after being forced to play on what he considered was a wet surface. He ended a heated exchange with French umpire Pascal Maria by swearing at the official.
