No Davydenko, Ljubicic or Blake. So the winners get an extra day off. A night match for Safin? Why do I get that sinking feeling that he'll lose? ehm, at masters series they don't have enough time to give them an extra day off... and why should Marat play so early, read his blog ... he loves to sleep and don't like this morning matches.... ;D It's an extra day off from the final to the second round match. I think they requested an extra day off? Actually, the best time for Marat to play is after the first round match or before the last match of the day. I was thinking back to Henman in Miami where they started very late due to rain delays and that had an effect on Marat. I hope that all the matches finish early and he won't have to play at around 1:00 AM in the morning.

Actually, the best time for Marat to play is after the first round match or before the last match of the day. I was thinking back to Henman in Miami where they started very late due to rain delays and that had an effect on Marat. I hope that all the matches finish early and he won't have to play at around 1:00 AM in the morning. Since all seeded players have a Bye in the first round, their second round matches are divided to Tuesday and Wednesday (Monday: only 1st round, Tuesday 1st and 2nd round, Wednesday only 2nd round). Of course it is taken into consideration by the organizers if somebody was in another tournament final. Still, there are quite a few other guys who are starting the tourny on Wednesday (e.g. Nadal, Baghdatis, Haas and Ancic). As for playing really late, the danger is minimal since there are only five 2 set matches before Marat and they gave them plenty of buffer time. Plus: Roger should be done real quick... Marat had to wait for hours in Moscow and he still did a terrific job so all this shouldn't be a worry. He's professional enough to be able to deal with these kinds of situations.

MUTUA MADRILENA MASTERS MADRID Madrid, Spain October 16, 2006
Tuesday Preview: Federer Begins Quest for 10th Title of 2006
Top seed Roger Federer, No. 6 Andy Roddick and home country hopefuls Tommy Robredo, seeded seventh, and David Ferrer, seeded 14th, play their second-round matches on Pista Central Tuesday.
Federer already has clinched a spot in Shanghai and has broken his own points record for the race with 1,374. Roddick at No. 4 and Robredo at No. 7 are both in position to make Shanghai, while Ferrer has a slim chance at No. 13. Each of them would earn 15 points for a win and one point for a loss Tuesday.
World No. 1 Federer of Switzerland takes on Nicolas Massu of Chile. Federer has a 3-1 career edge over the Chilean, including two wins this year (see match information below). Federer had a bye in the first round, while Massu defeated Gaston Gaudio, who retired at one-set all with a stomach ailment.
Federer, 25, comes into Madrid with a 14-match winning streak that includes titles at the US Open last month (d. Roddick) and at Tokyo two weeks ago (d. Henman). His last indoor ATP match was a five-set loss to Nalbandian in the Tennis Masters Cup final last November. Before that he won 14 indoor ATP matches in a row, starting after a quarterfinal loss to Henman at Paris in October 2003.
Federer has won nine tournaments so far this year, four more than anyone else. Nadal and Blake each have won five. Federer captured 11 crowns in each of the previous two years. His 42 career titles already rank him No. 12 in Open Era history.
The Swiss magician has won three ATP Masters Series events this year: Indian Wells in March, Miami in April and Toronto in August. He is playing here for the first time since 2003. He has a career record of 5-2 in Madrid, reaching the semifinals in 2003 (l. to Ferrero).
Massu, who turned 27 last Tuesday, won the sixth title of his career at Costa do Sauipe in February (d. Martin). He has a 9-9 record on hard courts this year, with his best finish on the surface coming at New Haven in August, where he reached the quarterfinals (l. to Calleri). He has a career record of 6-3 here, reaching the final in 2003 (l. to Ferrero, who was then ranked No. 1).
Roddick of the U.S. faces Sebastien Grosjean of France. The American holds a 7-1 edge over Grosjean and hasn’t lost to him since their first meeting four years ago. Roddick had a bye in the first round, while Grosjean beat Jonas Bjorkman.
Roddick, 24, reached the semifinals at Vienna last week (l. to Gonzalez), boosting his INDESIT ATP 2006 Race total to 448 points. He can guarantee a spot in Shanghai if he wins the title here. Since taking on Jimmy Connors as an advisor after Wimbledon, Roddick has gone 21-5, including his lone title of 2006 at Cincinnati in August (d. Ferrero). He has a career record of 1-3 here.
Grosjean, 28, is on pace for his eighth straight year of finishing with a record above .500 and an INDESIT ATP Ranking in the top 30. But he hasn’t finished a season ranked below No. 27 since 1998 and is currently ranked No. 30. He reached his second semifinal of the year in Metz just two weeks ago (l. to Djokovic). He has a 7-3 career mark here, reaching the semifinals in his 2002 debut (l. to Agassi).
Robredo battles Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina. The two are knotted at 1-1 in prior matches. Robredo had a bye in the first round, while Chela beat Spaniard Carlos Moya.
Robredo, 24, crept within one point of No. 6 James Blake in the Race for Shanghai by reaching the quarterfinals of Tokyo two weeks ago. But Blake widened his lead to 15 points by taking the title at Stockholm Sunday. Robredo has won 12 of his last 17 matches. He has a 4-4 record in Madrid, making it to the quarterfinals in 2004 (l. to Agassi).
Chela, 27, has two runner-up finishes this year – at Acapulco in February (l. to Horna) and at Kitzbuhel in July (l. to Calleri). But since the Kitzbuhel result, he hasn’t won more than two matches at any of the six tournaments he played. With his first-round win here, Chela evened his 2006 hard court record at 10-10. He has a career mark of 5-4 here, reaching the quarterfinals in 2003 (l. to Massu).
Ferrer plays British wild card Tim Henman for the first time. Ferrer had a bye in the first round, while Henman knocked out Spain’s Fernando Verdasco.
Ferrer, 24, has hit a rough spot in the past few weeks, winning only half of his last 10 matches, after an impressive 34-18 start to the year. He won the second title of his career at Stuttgart in July (d. Acasuso). He reached his third career ATP Masters Series semifinal at Miami in March (l. to Federer). Ferrer has a career record of 3-3 here, advancing to the quarterfinals last year (l. to Ginepri).
Also on Pista Central, former World No. 1 Marat Safin of Russia squares off against Jose Acasuso of Argentina in the first round. The Argentine won both of their prior matches.
Safin, 26, has come on strong in recent weeks, winning 12 of his last 17 matches, after starting the year.17-16. Last week in Moscow, he reached his first final (l. to Davydenko), since June 2005 at Halle (l. to Federer). Safin won the title the last time he played here -- in 2004 (d. Nalbandian). He missed last year’s tournament with a knee injury and has a career record of 5-2 in Madrid.Acasuso, who turns 24 Friday, is having a career year at 31-17. His previous high in wins was 27 last year (against 26 losses). He won the third title of his career at Vina del Mar in February (d. Massu). He has struggled on hard courts this year, going 6-9. Half of those wins came at the ATP Masters Series event in Toronto, where he reached the quarterfinals (l. to Gonzalez). He has a 2-2 career mark here.
In the other match on Pista Central Tuesday, Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia plays Gael Monfils of France. Monfils leads their series 2-1, with all three matches played last year.
Hrbaty, 28, reached his third semifinal of the year last week at Vienna (l. to Ljubicic). That result pushed his 2006 record above .500, to 26-25. He is seeking to finish the year at or above. 500 for the ninth time in his 10 full years on the ATP circuit. He has a career record of 1-2 here, playing only in 2004-05.
Monfils, 20, has shown a lot of potential in his two years on the ATP circuit, reaching the final of Doha in January (l. to Federer) and winning his first title at Sopot in 2005 (d. Mayer). He has been out of action since the US Open last month with a stress fracture in his left foot. Monfils lost in the first round here in his debut last year (to C. Rochus).
