Safin sprays winners to lift victory over Nalbandian
Madrid, 24th October 2004 (dpa) - Marat Safin hammered home his second title in a month Sunday as he overwhelmed Argentine David Nalbandian 6-2, 6-4 and 6-3 Sunday, claiming the trophy at the 2.425-million-euros Madrid Masters.
The victory in one hour, 52 minutes, followed on from the Russian's first tournament victory of the season, in Beljing in September, a result which began turning his season around. With his win, the Russian third seed has moved into sixth place in the race for one of the four remaining spots in the field of next month's eight-man Masters Cup.
The winner and runner-up both received bottles of champagne, and immediately took the opportunity to spray the bevy of models-turned-ballgirls who added a bit of glamour all week to showcase court matches. After handing a bottle to one model as a peace offering, the young woman immediately sprayed back, drenching the players as well as a few of her colleagues.
Safin lifted the 13th title of his career as he never let Nalbandian into the match at the Rockodromo, breaking six times and sending over 13 aces. Nalbaidian now stands 0-3 in finals at the Masters level, and lost another one this year in Rome to Carlos Moya.
Safin improved to 43-20 in 2004 as he beat Nalbandian for the fifth time in six meetings. The Argentine failed to make up ground in the Masters Cup race, standing tenth with two weeks or the regular season to play.
In the first set, Safin ended an early-match run of three breaks as he grabbed a 3-1 lead over Nalbandian, who had dropped his serve to love the game previously after breaking Safin back in the third game.
Four games later, the Russian had the opening set in his pocket thanks to a closing break. Safin continued to impose his game in the second, but had to recover after losing serve for in the third game. He did so nicely, getting it back in the seventh game on his way into a lead of two sets to love.
The third set also went well for the Russian, who left Nalbandian flat-footed with a break in the second game before taking a 5-2 lead. Nalbandian, with one ace all afternoon, was ineffectual, plagued by 38 unforced errors. He saved a match point in the penultimate game but went down to defeat as Safin served it out a game later.

My question is, do you guys think he will give it all in St. Petersburg or will take a little bit of rest which will be understandable giving how much he played recently? Well, I hope he can go 2-3 rds in St. Petersburg. The first rds should be really easy if he hasn't got into heavy partying which I hope he hasn't! I don't think he is THAT tired physically or will be at these last 3 (yeah! ) tourneys of the season, his mental freshness is another thing though. All the best for the remaining weeks of the season Marat!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry I'm a bit late in joining the celebration but once again 'real life' needed my full attention this weekend Anyway...what can I say?! I hadn't been able to follow any of the scores because I wasn't online and hadn't even had chance to check the results...so what a surprise to find Marat had not only beaten Agassi, but won the whole tournament (Not that I ever doubted he could ) I'm so over-the-moon for him! Thanks to everyone who sent me 'congrats' messages (even though I didn't really do anything ;D) I wish I could have been around to share the winning moment with you guys I'm so sorry but I won't be able to reply to all of you right now, I just don't have the time, but it was really incredibly sweet of you (especially Teresa and Maria V ) OK, here's some stuff that was emailed to be from some friends: I was just watching the relive from Marat's match and the commentators talked about the fact that Marat has been asked about the new kind of ball girls ;-) and that's what they said: It's seems that Safin said that he was kind of part of the idea. The idea came from Ion Tiriac but that they both talked about it. Of course the commentators said that they aren's surprised that Safin likes that idea and that he probably was part of the casting crew... loland another friend: What an amazing match - Marat was playing out of this world. Both Bill Threlfall and Barry Cowan said they hadn't seen Marat so focused and playing so fantastically for so long. Bill said it was like watching him when he won the US Open. He faltered a little bit in the second set but basically I think that was because Agassi stepped up his game but he still couldn't convert the break points he had. The first set Marat was simply superb - Agassi had no answer - and his serve was tremendous! As Bill said again Marat was a rock on the baseline and Agassi could not move him. He was so complimentary the whol time and normally he falls all over Agassi.

Thx for those coments Ruth! I've watched the relive of the final tonight and it was so good to see him play like this! Commentators kept on repeating that Marat made amazing progress concerning his concentration. They were saying, during the entire match (and in the semis also) that he was now very calm on court, calm, condident and focused. i was very happy and proud of him They talked abotu the ball bimbos thing , and yeah they reported that in his itw after the semis Marat kinda admitted that he took a part in the idea. They said that it wasn't surprising ;D And also at one moment they sais that players often offer balls, rackets, wristband and stuff to the ball kids, and one of the commentator asked the other if the bimbos would be offered something too from the players.... and the other commentator answered (talking about our dear Marat): his phone number perhaps... ;D What else? uhm, at 4-2 in the third set Marat was about to serve and stopped because of one of the ball girls made a mistake (dunno what cuz the camera wasn't on her), but Marat waited for her to get back in place and he smiled ;D And when he broke Nalby's serve to win the second set, Peter, Walt and the 2 other guys were very happy. And on the slow replay you could read on Peter's lips: "one more set, one more set"....
