Articles Draw for Wimbledon Thursday, 16 June, 2005
The Draw for the 2005 Championships has thrown up some intriguing match-ups, including possible all-Williams match in the fourth round between Venus and Serena Williams and a likely second round encounter between the 2003 runner-up Mark Philippoussis and this year's Australian Open champion, Marat Safin.
Roger Federer starts off his campaign against Paul-Henri-Mathieu. Meanwhile, his opponent in last year's final, Andy Roddick, will face Jiri Vanek in the first round. Roddick is seeded to play Tim Henman in the quarter-final, with the winner possibly facing French Open winner, Rafael Nadal.
Maria Sharapova defends her ladies' crown against Vives Llagostera in the first round but the 18 year-old could meet another rising starlet of women's tennis in the shape of 17 year-old Tatiana Golovin of France in the fourth round.
Meanwhile, there are shadows of Roland Garros in the ladies' draw with Sharapova on course to meet Justine Henin-Hardenne - who defeated her in the quarter-finals of the French Open this year - in the Wimbledon semi-finals. However, first Henin-Hardenne must defeat Mary Pierce in the fourth round in a repeat of the final in Paris earlier this month.
More soon.

Federer to start defence against Mathieu
Top seed Roger Federer will play France's Paul-Henri Matthieu in the first round at Wimbledon following the draw on Thursday. Second seed Andy Roddick was given a straightforward opening match against Jiri Vanek but in the second round could play giant Croatian Ivo Karlovic.
LIVE WTA s'HERTOGENBOSCH: Thursday's action
Women's top seed Lindsay Davenport also received a straightforward opening match when the world number one was drawn against Russia's Alina Jidkova. Champion and second seed Maria Sharapova plays Spain's Nuria Llagostera-Vives.
Roddick is expected to come through that test relatively easily but then could face the tallest man in tennis, Ivo Karlovic, in the second round.
Roddick narrowly beat the 6ft 10ins Croatian 7-6 7-6 in the final of the Queen's warm-up event at the weekend.
Men's third seed and former champion Lleyton Hewitt plays Belgian Christophe Rochus in round one. Hewitt was drawn in the top half of the draw and could meet Federer in the semis.
French Open champion and fourth seed Rafael Nadal faces American Vince Spadea. Nadal's teenage rival Richard Gasquet, beaten at the French Open by the Spaniard, could get his revenge in the third round.
British hope Tim Henman, seeded sixth in the bottom half of the draw, faces Finn Jarkko Nieminen in the opening round. He could meet Roddick in the last eight.
The leading contenders for the men's title mostly avoided dangerous floaters in the first round, but fifth seed Marat Safin must get past Paradorn Srichaphan before a possible clash with 2003 runner-up Mark Philippoussis.
The leading women mostly avoided tricky early encounters, although Justine Henin-Hardenne was drawn against heavy-serving Greek Eleni Daniilidou.
Venus Williams was drawn against a qualifier and sister Serena starts against fellow American Angela Haynes.
Third-seeded Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo, still seeking her first grand slam title, plays Argentine doubles specialist Paola Suarez.
The season's third major championships runs from June 20 to July 3.

Articles Men's Singles Preview Thursday, 16 June, 2005
If Roger Federer is to win Wimbledon for a third successive year he will be obliged to do it the hard way. The top seed and clear favourite has been offered a fairly undemanding start to the defence of his crown, with an opening match against Paul-Henri Mathieu, a 23-year old Frenchman who lives in Federer's homeland, Switzerland, but the route will rapidly become more difficult if form runs true.
Lying in Federer's path after a second round against a Czech, either Ivo Minar or Michal Tabara, are such experienced tour names as Nicolas Kiefer, followed by one of two Spaniards, Juan Carlos Ferrero or Tommy Robredo.
Fernando Gonzalez, the Chilean with a thunderous serve and booming forehand, could await the champion in the quarter-finals, with a semi-final to follow against either the third seed, Lleyton Hewitt, or the fifth seed, Marat Safin, who defeated Federer in the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January before going on to lift the title.
Safin, who threatened after a first round dismissal last year that he would never return to the grass of Wimbledon, has thought better of that comment, which is good news for the spectators and very likely bad news for his first round opponent, the popular Thai Paradorn Srichaphan.
If he comes through that test unscathed, Safin could next play an opponent with a giant reputation at The Championships, the Australian Mark Philippoussis, who is in the draw courtesy of a wild card. This was awarded in recognition of Philippoussis's appearance in the final two years ago, since when he has been plagued by injury and ill-fortune.
Short though he is of recent success, Philippoussis's power game could unsettle the Russian while the turf is still juicy in the early stages, and another grass specialist, Mario Ancic of Croatia, could be planning to derail Safin in the fourth round. Britain's Tim Henman can testify to the threat of the gangling Ancic, having been eliminated by him in the quarter-finals 12 months ago.
Hewitt, the champion in 2002, has benefited from a good draw which should pose few problems until Safin, or his conqueror, hoves into sight in the last eight. Hewitt will be grateful for that luck of the early draw, since last week's Stella Artois tournament at London's Queen's Club was his first since March, following toe and rib injuries.
Hewitt could have wished for a more extended run than he managed at the Stella, where he was blasted out in the quarter-finals by the giant Croatian, Ivo Karlovic, but at least he will be grateful that the tallest man in tennis (6ft 10in) is well away from him this time in the other half of the draw.
Instead, it is the second seed, Andy Roddick, who must take on the most dangerous floater at this year's Championships. Roddick, promoted to that second seeding because he was the 2004 runner-up and is in excellent grass form, defeated Karlovic in last Sunday's Stella tournament final, but it was a tight, grim affair of two tie breaks. However, that victory will boost Roddick's confidence, should the 22-year-old American be in need of it.
The gloomy news for Britain's only serious hope, Tim Henman, as he prepares for h is 12th challenge for the Wimbledon title, is that he could face France's Sebastien Grosjean, who eliminated him in the quarter-finals two years ago, and if he gets past that testing hurdle it will probably mean facing Roddick and his record serving prowess in the last eight. Things certainly get no easier for the British number one in his bid to become the first from the host country to win the men's singles title since Fred Perry 69 years ago.
As the only former champions in the men's draw, Federer and Hewitt will again be among the select few with realistic chances of hoisting the trophy in a fortnight's time. Since both are in the same half of the field, only one will get as far as the final and a repeat of last year's Federer-Roddick epic is very much on the cards.

Interesting read....
GO PAT!!!!!!!!!! LOL Cash disputes Hewitt's seeding
Australian Pat Cash has criticised Wimbledon championship organisers for seeding compatriot Lleyton Hewitt, the 2002 winner, third. Cash argues that as world number two Hewitt should have ranking and not last year's beaten finalist Andy Roddick.
Wimbledon's organisers handed Roddick the second seed berth on Wednesday because of the American's better recent form on grass.
"I think it's a real slap in the face," Cash, who won Wimbledon in 1987, told BBC radio.
"I don't think it's fair that they should be changing it around."
As second seed, Roddick, who lost in last year's final to Roger Federer, cannot meet the Swiss top seed until the final of this year's tournament. Third seed Hewitt could face Federer in the semi-finals.
"Lleyton Hewitt is the number two player in the world," Cash said. "He should have stayed number two. He is a Wimbledon champion. He is the [2005] Australian Open finalist.
"I don't like them tinkering with the seeds. The guys work the whole year to get rankings to win the grand slams.
"It has certainly given Roddick a boost that I don't think he deserves over Hewitt.
"The rankings are there for a reason. They are fair."
Unlike the other three major championships, Wimbledon has traditionally varied its seedings from the official rankings in order to reflect players' strengths on grass.

WOW
i did not think I could get excited by Wimbledon but reading the MB its contagious (sp) ;D
Some how I dont feel so worried about Marat's first two round matches IF he plays anywhere the level he played in Halle he will do just fine.
Paradon had a good run in 2003 BUT he lost in the 1 round 2004 against Karlovic AND at Stella this year he also lost in the first round and against Kim. Overall not very impressive.
[quoteLondon / Queen's Club, England International Series, 6/6/2005, O, Grass , Draw: 56
R64 Kim, Kevin (USA ) 64 3-6 4-6 [/quote]
As for Mark, I he his not even listed in the list of players so have not had time to check his record for last year, or if he even played Stella.
Does anyone know off hand?
He did well last year I think but has not done anything really since.
If what Karen says is true, great, but I dont trust Johnny Mac one bit ;D As for PimPim I would dearly love to see him get a well deserving Birthday present ;D
Thanks EVERYONE for the draws, articles etc etc ;D
