Old article about Marat in Dubai this year
Safin Ready For Success In Dubai
- Russian star looks to put poor performances in Dubai behind him -
Dubai, UAE, Thursday, February 9th, 2006: Marat Safin will be ready to make up for lost time when he joins defending champion Roger Federer and a star-studded cast at the Dubai Tennis Championships later this month.
The charismatic but unpredictable Russian has missed many months of competition because of a persistent knee injury that bothered him for much of last year. Eventually the pain became too much, and after reaching the quarter-finals at Cincinnati in August he didn't play again for the rest of the year, pulling out of the US Open, the Masters Cup and, more recently, the Australian Open where he was the defending champion.
So the two-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one will be more than ready to try and improve his surprising record at the Dubai Tennis Championships when play in the $1,000,000 ATP event gets underway on 27th February.
Although he reached the final upon his debut in 2001, retiring with a back injury against Juan Carlos Ferrero when down 6-2 3-1, the Russian has managed just one victory since.
He missed the 2002 event, but returned in 2003 and beat Alexander Waske before falling in a third set tiebreaker to Tommy Robredo. Perhaps his most memorable match came in 2004 when he was drawn to play Roger Federer in the first round, and lost a magnificent match in two tiebreaks. Last year, he fell in the first round again, to Nicolas Kiefer.
"Safin is one of the true superstars of the game and we are delighted he is returning to Dubai for another shot at the title," said Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free, owners and organisers of the Dubai Tennis Championships.
"I'm sure he will be very keen to put his recent performances here in Dubai behind him and come out and show the form that has seen him become one of the leading players in the world."
As well as Federer, Safin will be challenged by young Spanish sensation Rafael Nadal, the legendary Andre Agassi, Davis Cup winner Ivan Ljubicic, the talented Dominik Hrbaty and Australian Open quarter-finalist Nikolay Davydenko when he tries to improve his record in Dubai.
Spending so many months dealing with his injury has been frustrating for Safin, but he refused to take the drastic step of undergoing surgery.
"It is not an unusual injury," he said. "In fact, it is fairly common with basketball players. It's called 'jumper's knee'. It is not very serious but, unfortunately, I stopped playing with it too late. I started to have problems in Indian Wells and Miami in March. I continued to play on clay as I was hoping that the problem was related to hard surfaces. But that did nothing else but worsen the injury.
"After Wimbledon, I decided to go for a consultation at a private clinic. One advised me to stop for two or three months, but I did not take the advice. I really wanted to play at the US Open. It is over there in America that I caused the problem to worsen. I could have had an operation, but the price to be paid was too high, one year of staying away."
Instead, Safin underwent therapy, which takes up his entire day.
"I spend five hours per day with the doctors. I start at 9am and I finish around 4 p.m. I work the same programme six days out of the seven," he said.
The Dubai Tennis Championships is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free and takes place under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Why did I think the first pics of him back on the court would be with a nicely groomed haircut and one of those great suits? I'm so conflicted! I'm thrilled he's going to be playing, concerned about the draw (and doubles - doesn't he go nuts play Santoro - won't that knee be going left right up down???) , but OMG ~~~~~ the hair, a bun and a brand new spasmo humongous tattoo of the sun across that gorgeous back. I can only hope he has a good start so I can see more than one game at Indian Wells. And now, even if I can drag someone to come with me to that snobby stuck up tourny, it's going to be a ragfest about My Man. At least he's back. Back to work Marat!
