Russian Marat Safin, number two seed in Rome, has lost the first set of his first round match against Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic. Safin was serving for the set at 5-3 but was broken after committing several unforced errors which left the crowd gasping. He broke back to force the tie-break before missing several more easy shots, including a volley with an open court in front of him, to lose the set. Both players are hitting flat and deep from the baseline When you read this, one really has to congratulate Marat on keeping his head, and staying focus to come back and win the next two sets 6/1 6/1 to win the match. Great effort and great boost to his confidence. Well done Marat
