The Italia site has said Safin lost 1st set with a case of nerves. Missing volleys into the open court, etc. Dig deep and fight Marat !!

Argentina's Guillermo Coria had a fright in his first round match on day two of the Rome Masters but pulled through after almost three hours on centre court 76 57 64. His opponent, Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, came onto centre court ready to throw everything he had at the number nine seed, and for two sets the game plan looked as if it could have paid off. Gonzalez went for the line and hit it with big groundstrokes on both wings, rocking Coria with a late break in the second set to level the match. He fought off ten break points in a row but could not keep up the momentum in the third set. Coria on the other hand came through in part due to his trademark low level of unforced errors. If the seedings go as predicted, Coria will play fellow Argentine David Nalbandian in the quarter finals, though Nalbandian is struggling on court number one.
Well Nalbandian lost as we know

Russian Marat Safin, number two seed in Rome, has lost the first set of his first round match against Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic. Safin was serving for the set at 5-3 but was broken after committing several unforced errors which left the crowd gasping. He broke back to force the tie-break before missing several more easy shots, including a volley with an open court in front of him, to lose the set. Both players are hitting flat and deep from the baseline

Fabrice Santoro of France has beaten last year's finalist David Nalbandian 64 16 64 on court number one. The number eight seed, who has been plagued by injury throughout his career, had been expected to do well after winnig his third career title last week in Munich. But Santoro, a finalist in Tunis though better known as a doubles player, proved too consistent for the Argentine. The Tahiti-born Frenchman will play the winner of italy's wildcard Davide Sanguinetti and Max Mirnyi in the second round.
