I don't know what's happening to Marat. I mean, he has bombed out in his last four tournaments. Even last year, he had occasional success in between (semi at Monte, final at Estoril). The good thing is that he bombed out in Wimbledon and US Open so he can only gain points there, but he has the two masters series to defend in the fall. He needs to make up some of his points.

He always does this and he always bounces back eventually so don't give up hope. I much rather have him bombing in tms events and doing well at RG then the other way round lol

Well.....what more there is to say. Here is my humble opinion on the matter. I watched the game from the very beginning till the very end and here is my own impression.
Marat came out on court in a brilliantly good mood, he was smiling all the time before the game started, he was calm and willing to play and that looked very promising. Then it all began...Juan Carlos broke Marat's serve and then minutes later Marat broke back. And that's when it all started. What I think hapenned is that Fererro has a very Spanish style of playing on clay, he did his best to make Marat play that way, i.e. long plays for every point at the backline until somebody makes a mistake, i.e. something that requires a lot of patience, nerve and confidence. Marat is not like that, one thing I like about Marat is that he hates playing boring tennis, he is always trying to do his best to make his game look exciting, innovative and bright. He was trying to do the same yesterday but made too many mistakes...way too many. After the first set, which lasted for about 45 minutes, he had made about 40 unforced errors..that's a huge number!!! He constantly looked like he was in a real rush to play and get it over and done with. All through the game I kept shouting "Slow down! Where are you rushing to?" (hubby had a tough evening trying to calm me down ROTFL). But he just kept running somewhere....
So then a very normal thing hapenned. Marat went bananas after he realised he can't do anything right. He smashed a racket, almost smashed the second one and the amount and strength of swear words I heard him shouting out at himself can't be compared to anything. Peter looked extremely worried and I think he realised this was not gonna be their day from the middle of the first set.
No offense to Juan Carlos, mind you I am glad he is returning back and gaining form, but he didn't do anything outstanding yesterday. The major factor why he won the match is simply patience and accuracy, there were maybe 2 or 3 really good and bright shots he made but that's about it. And Marat...bad day yet again, same old story...he starts getting frustrated and that's it..no matter how hard he tries he can't do anything....and the more he can't do anything, the more frustrated he gets.
On the whole, what I am trying to say is..yes, I couldn't calmly watch it, I was screaming at my TV screen, I was roaming around my living-room in agony and yes I almost started crying after I realised he was definitely not gonna make it, and yes in the ATP Race he is no longer third but fourth now, because Nadal is through to the quarterfinal and has now more points than Marat.....BUT
1. It's just another game. 2. It's only April 3. It's the first clay tournament this year 4. Marat is a real fighter and you wait and see....we're gonna show them all!!!!! 5. Today is a new day and the most important thing is not to look back but to look forward.
Phew......so there, I spat it all out. I feel much better now ROTFL
One more thing about yesterday that I would really like to share is the match before Marat's: Federer-Gonzales. Did anyone see it? OH MY GOD......THAT is what I call tennis. Incredible, bright, exciting and till the very very end you have no idea what's gonna happen. I cannot believe that at a certain point you could actually very vividly see that Federer had no idea what hit him and how to get out of this situation, for the first time in months I saw Federer making mistakes that were so foolish it's almost unreal that Federer can actually make them.
I think we should really lookout for that Chilean, if he continues like that....boy he has a bright future.

yesterday's official report
Two Former Champions Advance
Playing his first clay court tournament of the year, top seed Roger Federer continued his quest for his first Masters Series Monte-Carlo title when he defeated Chilean Fernando Gonzalez 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-4 to move into the quarterfinals. Federer served for the match at 5-3 in the second set but ultimately was forced to toil for 2 hours, 21 minutes. The Swiss is looking to become the first player in ATP Masters Series history (since 1990) to win three consecutive ATP Masters Series titles.
The 2002 and 2003 Monte Carlo champion Juan Carlos Ferrero returned to top form in order to take out the No. 2 seed Marat Safin 6-2, 6-4. The Spaniard will be making his first appearance in a quarterfinal since last year's tournament in Valencia.
Federer will face French qualifier Richard Gasquet who also moved into the quarterfinals after fending off No. 10 seed Nikolay Davydenko in a tough 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 battle.
2004 Roland Garros champion Gaston Gaudio breezed into the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Victor Hanescu. Hanescu had only one opportunity to break the Argentine's serve and couldn't convert, allowing Gaudio to close out the match in just 55 minutes.
Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal broke Oliver Rochus six times en route to a 6-1, 6-2 victory. The No. 11 seed is hoping to claim his third clay court title of the season (Costa do Sauipe, Acapulco) and will face Gaston Gaudio in what should be a highly competitive quarterfinal.
The defending champion Guillermo Coria was also successful on day four of competition. The Argentine didn't give up a single point in the first set tie-break and cruised in the second set earning the 7-6(0), 6-1 victory. He will now face Spaniard David Ferrer who was down a set before his opponent, Mariano Zabaleta, was forced to retire due to a foot injury.
Italian Filippo Volandri engaged in a thrilling 6-7(6), 7-6(3), 6-4 battle with Mariano Puerta. Volandri avenged his semifinal loss to Puerta last week in Casablanca and will now face two-time champion Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Can't say it's a bad start on clay, right? Knocked by the former Roland Garros Champion. Hope to see more match from you next time.

i don't think JCF is good enough to beat Marat. i mean, yeah, he was once the winner of RG, but now, he's obviously not as good as marat. what led to the failure is the way that marat played. how many UE did marat make yesterday? maybe 60? 60 UE! it's even ridiculous! i didn't get sleep until 2 in the morning and what i saw was no more than these errors.
yesterday's match was the first one i watched after the AO and i was really upset. i didn't know what he was doing. i guess i haven't got used to his way.
i know i shouldn't get too disappointed when he is losing. and now i really feel much better. no matter he wins or loses, he is marat safin, the one that i will never blame.
well, let's wait for RG.
BTW, the hat seems not as terrible as it used to be... and though he lost, there were still a few highlights that proved marat's outstanding ability.

I decided I like the hat As I said before with the way his hair is right now it's a necessity more than anything with all those curls going down on his face About his outstanding ability...no doubt about that ;D

the interview make me feel really easy now "You have to be happy with who you are. You cannot change. You can pretend that you can change, but you can't. Nobody's changing and nobody can change you no matter how much you try, no matter how much time you, you know ‑‑ like how much time you put in this. Just you have to live with that. " he always teaches me a lot
