I'm divided over this one - I mean, I'm so genuinely delighted to see JCF returning from injury - he's one of my faves and has been for ages - and at the same time, it would have been great to see Marat go that little bit further at MC.... *Ho Hum* As someone said (I think it was Nicki?) I'd rather he crashed out of a fairly inconsequential tourney, rather than one of the 'big names'. There's plenty of stuff left for Marat to win this year, people ;D BTW, before I forget, thank you Annie for such a detailed match report. I always appreciate fans who can give technical opinions as well as general ones, because I'm no expert on tennis shots and it's always great to read things from the perspective of someone who 'knows what they're talking about' So thanks!

Wow, good job to Richie for beating Roger. I so wanted to see that match. And did you see how Nadal whipped Gaudio's ass? And Gaudio was FO champion, for God's sake. I really think Nadal's gonna win FO this year or maybe Coria. Marat has a good chance, too. You never know with him.

i don't think JCF is good enough to beat Marat. JCF did beat Marat, so by definition he is good enough... It is not at all obvious. JCF is coming back from having had Chicken Pox at the age of 24--he is very lucky to be alive right now--getting Chicken Pox as an adult is very very serious and recovery is very very long. JCF had match point on Federer in Dubai this year...so that says a little something about his ability... As Marat himself would say, 'if grandmothers had balls, they would be grandfathers!" It doesn't necessarily follow that if Marat had played a cleaner match he would have won--he may have, but he may not have... Marat probably does have more raw talent than JCF, but raw talent without execution doesn't win matches--being able to excute one's game is just as important as having raw talent... Not all unforced errors are really "unforced," is it not possible that what frustrated Marat and made him so error prone was exactly JCF's willingness to play hour long points? If so, then the stats might be misleading... Patience and accuracy are what tennis is all about--they are tennis! (esp. clay court tennis! ) If you want Marat to win RG then you'll have to hope he works a little harder at being more patient and more accurate...

Well!! I just saw the tape of the Federer/Gasquet match and it really was an awesome match almost as awesome as Marat's semi with Roger in Houston (was a semi?) and his semi against Roger in the AO, ( but then I am some what biased, I am the first to admit to this) Gasquet really really was on fire, and a pleasure to watch. And his match point winner.......again...almost yes almost as breathtaking as Marat's against Roger in the AO ;D Soooo you know who is coming to the Davis Cup tie in July I think Tarp's and the boys will need to sit down and watch this tape together if they do decide to play clay, if Gasquet is on fire then as he was today, well....watch out guys!! AND...... did you wonderful people know that ROGER made [glow=red,2,300]56 ue's[/glow] today......... yep.......56. Almost as much as Marat made ;D I am looking forward to Gasquets match against Nadal tomorrow and hope so hope that Gasquet will win, he seems so much nicer than Nadal, sounds shallow i know, but Nadal has never been a fav of mine ever!! Also, was it just me, or did those of you who saw the match find Roger's girlfriend positively animated today? each time the camera showed her she was chatting away with some guy and all gigles.....well almost......and did not look at all concerned that her man was going down!!

Definetly a pleasure ;D Wonder if Roger's confidence will slide a bit after this? I doubt it, the man is made of ice and steel But hopefully the media will turn to Gasquet for all those stupid rivalry questions and leave Marat alone!!

LOL I love that quote of his. But I guess we will never know eh? My guess is that he would have won.
Melusine, Marat reconises this, he said:
Q. Would you say that you lost more the match than he won it tonight in a way because of the way you were playing and he is playing right now?
MARAT SAFIN: No. The way I was playing today, I was little bit ‑‑ had too many unforced errors. As I said, I was rushing a little bit too much. My chances were there. First set, I had many chances to break him. Second set, I was a break up and just a few stupid mistakes that cost me the match.
MARAT SAFIN: . It's really difficult to put pressure on his backhand. Of course eventually if I will be a little bit stable in the court, then I will be playing, continuing hitting to his backhand, I would overpower him. That's why I was a little bit rushing too much to go down the line. I should have waited a little bit more for better opportunities.
No, it just was tactically a bit wrong, but nothing ‑‑ it's not that he is playing with the backhand that doesn't allow me to do anything with it. I hit there. I choose this way of winning, and it didn't work.
Yes Melusine we want him to win RG, and its his goal, like he said:
MARAT SAFIN: That's my goal, actually. That's my goal for the whole career. I'm trying, and I will try, try to win it. I always played well there, but for some reason I couldn't ‑‑ I was missing something extra, you know, to win it. I was in the semifinals playing quite well, then I had a terrible match against Ferrero , semifinals. One time in quarterfinals, but I ran out of gas. Last year I had blisters. So it was always a little bit something is missing. That's why I'm going to try to prepare myself as much as I can for the tournament.
And I believe him

56 UE for Roger?! impossible is nothing... ;D After Miami, i think i am becoming more and more interested in Nadal. He's cute, isn't he? I hope he can win the MC. that is the best end since marat is out now. But for the RG, of course he is not the best choice.
