Russia's Male Tennis Team captain Shamil Tarpischev announced today that after numerous discussions Russia chose clay as a surface to be used in the next round of Davis Cup in Moscow to be held in July 2005. I know it's early but thought I'd share the news I think it's a rather wise choice, since after Russia-Chile everyone certainly realised that hard surface is HARD for us LOL

I guess as the last time they met, Russia beat France on clay in Bercy, so maybe based on this and with RG just before, it makes sense to chose Clay. Hopefully playing at home will help. It will be interesting to see/hear if Marat has any comment to make regarding this decision. He did not seem to pleased with the last choice of surface when they played against Chile!! This is the head to head 2002 RUS d. FRA 3-2 in FRA World Group - Final Palais Omnisports Paris Bercy, Paris, FRA Clay (I) 29 Nov - 01 Dec 2002

Thanks for that Annie.
Didn't Marat say he didn't like playing at home, because of the pressure to win?
Clay is a good choice. If you beat them once on Clay, why not again? ;D

Yeah Teresa it really showed that he wasn't too pleased. He couldn't get it straight, the surface was too fast and even Misha struggled bit time. That's why I said it's best to choose clay. The problem that Tarpischev also pointed out is that there will be Davis Cup and simultaneously there will be the women's Federation Cup in Moscow at the same time, so they had to find a good compromise since there aren't many places you can hold tournaments like that at in Moscow.

Let´s see what happends ;D Yeah lau, I can see why you're cautious but if you seriously weigh all the pros and cons, I don't think it's such a bad choice to be honest with you. We saw that hard surface is very bad for us, you will never be able to find a good grass court in Russia so that's out of the picture and too much hassle....so yeah I think clay isn't bad at all. But as you said...we'll see what happens

Lau, I agree with Annie here, clay is not bad at all. And Shamil T. said it will be faster clay that the Frenchies are not so used to. And none of us will forget the 2002 final Russia won on clay, right? So I wouldn't really worry too much yet. Let's see how things will be after the clay court season and Wimby. Who's injured and whatnot. But I'm sure Shamil T. discussed the choice in detail with Marat after Marat wasn't too happy with the carpet they had vs Chile, although he himself had voted for this carpet too, LOL. OK, I'm off now, have fun everyone!
