here's some gossip vass translated. but he is, i quote, "too lazy to post it" so i'm webmonkeying for him. Safin: I am driving on my beemers crying "Bite Me" to the villains. OR Safin: You can "bite me", you, car stealers! I'll still drive on my sweet beemers!" Russia's best tennis player bought a car to stipe car thieves. In the autumn 2002, just before a Davis Cup tie Marat Safin's four-wheel-drive BMW X5 costing around $90 000 got stolen. The car was never found but Safin without much hesitation collected the insurance money and bought an exact same vehicle. And now when the Davis Cup returns to Moscow (tomorrow Russia is facing Thailand) Marat again drives over to his training setions to the "Louzhniki" sports-complex on the twin-brother of his stolen "beemer". It seems that Safin is teasing the car theives. Whatever was (is) the case the last disappearence of his car didn't detter Marat from winning his matches. And even if the same story repeats this time, we might be sure in the victory of our countrymen over the Thai.... Yevgeni Kafelnikov is too loyal to his habbits. The "newly-baked" coach or team-Russia always liked Audi cars, and in 2002 he drove the roads of Russia on his cool A8 sedan. Today there's a lot more of Kafelnikov and he's much harder to miss- his weight is nearing the milestone number "one hundred", but for some reason his car only decreased in size: he's now driving on a small A6. www.kp.ru/daily/23366/32326/and i quote vass once again, "I'm not even going to comment on the idiotic article. I just like the heading. "

There's that Press Conference which I didn't translate yet.... It has very little of Marat in it but is related to DC, and is one curius piece of Press Conferences in general.

Russia go with Andreev and Safin The draw for the World Group Play-off between Russia and Thailand in Moscow has been made and is above; Paradorn Srichaphan will take on surprise starter Igor Andreev in the opening singles rubber on Friday to be followed by Danai Udomchoke facing former world number one Marat Safin following Thursday's draw for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group playoff tie between Thailand and Russia. The Russians have been installed as overwhelming favourites to retain their place among the 16-team World Group next year, while the Asians will be trying to reach the elite company of men's tennis for the first time in their history. Russian team captain Shamil Tarpischev sounded overconfident on the eve of the match. Asked by the press if he was hoping to win the tie, Tarpischev, who guided Russia to its first ever Davis Cup title in 2002, said: "No, I'm not hoping, I'm sure we're going to win." The home team chose a slow clay surface for the three-day tie at Moscow's Luzhniki Ice Palace, hoping to slow down Thailand number one Paradorn Srichapan. "It's the least favourable surface for him," Tarpischev said. Srichaphan, however, thinks his team has a good chance to beat the odds. "It's going to be a very difficult task for us because we're playing away from home and the surface also does not suit us very well," the Thai told a news conference. "We only had two days of practice for this tie, but we're going to give our best shot and then see what happens." Tarpischev chose to make a last-minute change, inserting Andreev for the singles matches instead of Davis Cup hero Mikhail Youzhny, who secured Russia a winning point in the 2002 final against France by coming from two sets down to beat Paul-Henri Mathieu in an epic five-set match in Paris. "I was expecting to play Youzhny, especially on clay, but I know that Andreev is also a good player, so we'll see how it goes," said Srichaphan. "Actually all four of our players are capable of doing the job, but I picked Andreev simply because he has been playing well lately as he reached the final in Bucharest on clay last week," said Tarpischev. "I'm in good form and playing well at the moment, so I'm looking forward to playing Paradorn," said 21-year-old Andreev, who made his Davis Cup debut for Russia in the first round when Russia lost 3-2 to Belarus in Minsk. Former World No. 1 Safin, ranked number nine in the world on the ATP Champions Race, has struggled for consistency this season after an injury-plagued 2003. But the 2000 US Open champion vowed to give his best shot after winning his first title in almost two years last week in Beijing where he beat Youzhny in the final of the China Open. "The win was good for my morale," said the big Russian, wearing a "Lucky 13" baseball cap. Safin said he bought his cap in Beijing and decided to keep it on after winning his first ATP crown in 22 months. "I think everyone expects us to win because we're the favourites and playing at home, but nevertheless we expect a tough match," he said. "In sports and in tennis you can never be sure of victory until you actually win the last point. We can't expect them to give it to us, we have to win it ourselves." It will be the first Davis Cup tie between the two countries. www.daviscup.com/gallery/popup.asp?id=12943¤t=3012
