btw... Marat is in the photogalary of 'history'.. a picture from back when he was young and innocent.. ;D 2000 US Open champion Marat Safin is the first player from Russia to win the titleFunny thing.. the picture of Mats Wilander says he's 1998's champion... ;D Ow he wished he could still play tennis at that level in 1998! I think they've made a lil mistake there... like a 10-year mistake.. (yeah.. it was '88.. ) And when I checked the champions list.. it caught my eye that some guy called Ivan Lendl reached the final of the USO eight times in a row!! ssssoowie!! he won 'only' three times of that.. but wow thats a hell of a thing to accomplish!! 8 times!! okie.. thats it for now with the 'history 'n stats' ;D ;)Caroline

Thanks for the history lesson ;D

Okay, sorry people I couldn't scan the article, my scanner broke down But since it's a small article(Only the Marat Part), I'll write it for ya. Here it goes: The Sportstar Saturday, August 28,2004
THE GREAT WIDE OPEN by Stephen Tignor
Marat Safin The game's drama king doesn't play tennis matches as much as stage on-court operas. They're tragedies, of course, with him in the lead role. You know the pose: the shrug, the mouth open to the sky, the palms up-Why is this happening to me? And that could be at 30-all in the first game. Safin has always been prone to dark moods, but this year he seems trapped by them, unable to let his immense talent flow for more than a few games at a time. Even his victories are laborious--three five-setters at the Autralian, two at the French. He can't win a match without first torturing himself to the limit.
Not that this is bad for fans. Few players have more attractive game, and no one is as unpredictable, even in his celebrations. After winning a spectacular point at the French, he dropped his shorts. " I just felt like it," was the explanation. Put him in front of the liquored-up fans in Ashe Stadium at night and you've got the makings for the best show in tennis. FLUSHING FORCAST:Who can say? Safin has won the tounament(2000), and he's gone out in the second round twice. He's been equally unpredictable in Slams this year, reaching the final in Australia but losing his opener at Wimbledon. After a long summer hardcourt season, he may be mentally fried. Which should be entertaining in itself. x-------------------------------x Joy ;D

I went to US Open today to watch some guys including Marat. Here is a little report of what I saw..
First of all Marat's news: I saw him practicing today at about 12pm on practice court 4 with Thomas Johannson. He chose the worst possible location to practice because the closest I could I could get to see him was about a mile away on the top of the bleachers from the court 4 or something... I think he played a set after some warm ups... He played OK but still missing few balls. He didn't like something (could be a little bit of wind or the planes from La Guardia airport) so he wasn't in the best of moods. He was a little bit sluggish I thought, although he broke Thomas once at 0 I remember. His serve was working more or less but his ground game was not the best I've seen. I don't know the exact score but I think he won 6-4.. and Thomas didn't play well either.. That's about it about Marat.. oh one more thing I asked Walt (I saw him couple of hours later) about Marat briefly he said he is doing alright and will be playing Tuesday and already went to hotel, so he had just one practice i guess.
non-Marat news...
I saw bunch of practices including Guga - Nalbandian (good one), Ferrero - Dent, Ferrero - Costa (good one), Sharapova - Capriati.. , Guga - some spanish dude, MoMo, Gonzales, Chela - Massu, Yuzhniy - Santoro (interesting one), others... Nalbandian - Robredo..
Ask me if you want more details for certain players.

He prob picked that court to be a little private maybe, sorry for you though.....wish you could have been closer. He hates to practise so guess thats why he would not be in a great mood, and I guess at 1200 noon he would be a bit sluggish, but it is a good time for him to practise as they will no doubt schedule his games around this time knowing he prefers to play later in the day. Tell me though was Peter was there? Thanks Vlad but for me Marat is enough for me ;D Appreciate the report, thanks AND JOY sorry to hear about your scanner and thanks for posting the bit in the article about Marat

Yes, both Peter and Walt Landers were there with him. Peter tried to tell him something all the time but again because I was so far away, I couldn't tell what exactly...
