post match interview[/b] Marat Safin Wednesday, 11 August 2004 7:30 pm I sort of expected this to be a tough match. Lopez was lucky, especially in the first set. I lost my confidence in this match, so I tried to end points quickly, which was a mistake. Lopez played much better. The ease with which I hit powerful shots is an important part of my game. That's the way I have to play. I don't know what the Davis Cup captain was thinking when he said that I has enough talent and ability to be number one, but I lack determination. Tennis is like the weather: there are good and bad days. It is very difficult to maintain the highest level of performance. It's easy to stand by and voice various opinions. What I did last night did not in any way influence my game today. I am a professional, I take responsibility for my actions. I did not come to Sopot to waste my time but to gain points. I'll need them to play in the Tennis Masters Cup in Houston. My start in the Olympic Games had no influence over my game here in Sopot. The Idea Prokom Open was on my schedule and there is still some time before the Olympics. What sort of game do I dislike? Grass. Wimbledon is very difficult for me. When it comes to the French, I was a finalist and a quarterfinalist and believe that winning it is possible for me, I still have time. I do not recall saying that tennis doesn't need the Olympic Games. The media always look for controversy in what I say. I have no influence over that. I do believe that for tennis players, winning the Olympics is not as important as winning a Grand Slam. Those are the tournaments that really count. My sister has a good chance of becoming a great player. She still has some growing up to do, gain experience through playing and losing a lot of matches. She also needs some more self confidence. Dinara was injured during Wimbledon, and Sopot is the first tournament she played after the break. Our Mother is no longer her coach, she has a new one. Mother is here, because Dinara is not easy to work with. A new coach and no mom is the best thing that could happen to her. I like it a lot here in Sopot. It's like a Polish St Tropez . I'd gladly come back next year, but that decision belongs to the tournament's director. (http://www.ideaprokomopen.pl/en/fanklub/wywiad.php?id=111&rok=2004)

Thanks Mieke!! hmmm, of course you can't maintain the highest level of performance.... but against a nobody i would think the minimum level should be just oaky I dunno if it comes from me or what, but i don't find him very convincing....ok, enough rambling from me, focus on the Olympics now oh and: LOL, she gets that from her bro, no? ;D

Just like Damita said... I don't want to say things which I will regret but I just can't help it at the moment and I have to say it.... He says that it's like a weather... Okay I understand that, but when was the last time we saw a sunny day? AO methinks... I know that people have ups and downs but he seems to have more "downs" recently. He says that he wants to play TMC in Huston? Sorry Marat, but not this year! Not with this game! Every single time I was finding excuses for him like a bad draw, personal problems, illness etc. But this? This tournament helped me to realize that there are no excuses for a bad game! Now I will have bigger distance to his results. Sorry Marat for saying that! And sorry guys that you have to listen to my ramblings! Maybe tomorrow I will wake up and look at this problem in a different way, but right now it's how I feel.

Ok what the hell happened last nite? I really want to know!! But I can't believe he lost, I always try to put a positive spin on things but I just can't get over this. I know that there are no "easy" matches, but what the hell happened out there today?? I really thought he had such a big chance in this tourney, I mean really when have we seen a draw like this? But hopefully being Marat, he'll completely suprise us and after this abysmal tourney he'll turn around and win a gold medal, or better still the US Open! (Hey look at that, I can still think positively, I must have alot of patience!!), and I can still be hopefull can't I?

Don't be SO negative everyone!!!!!!!!!The year isn't over yet! he can still achieve great things!!!!!! Two months ago you told me: "don't be so negative". and I said: "Marat has to give me a reason not to be so negative". Today everyone around is bitter and negative. Don't tell me it's me who transmitted the negative attitude to others. I'd liek to think it's me, but I'll go on Marta as the reason of bitterness on this. If there are so many bitter people when teher were only a few just a day ago it means that MArat is giving nothing but reasons to be mad. The only thing that can make us positive right now is the ole " it's Marat - anything is possible". But let's be honest huh? That didn't work much this year, atleast since Monaco. Intevals between Marat's rises are getting longer and longer... Untill he does play well atleast for two tournaments straight I'll not have much confidence in him.

ow come on guys, of course this loss was dissappointing and unexpected. But I'm convinced he didn't tank the match. He wouldn't do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [/b] [/quote] Tottally agree with u ME You know, everyone was like shocked when he said he was going to play Sopot, wrong thing to do, maddness, then everyone happy when he goes to Sopot and then he gets SH*T for losing in the 3rd round. Its not like its a total tragedy or something, and so what if he 'tanked' the match, I personally don't think that he did, but come on, sure its not great to lose out to Lopez, but hell its not like this is a grand slam or somthing, his mind has to be on going to the olympics, Athens is where Marat SHOULD BE NOW getting ready, not fluffing in Sopot and having tom dick and harry saying he tanked his match. People, Marat is going to the Olympics....I think we should all be wishing Marat the very best of luck at the Olympics, I know for me, I really want him to do well there, and I really hope he does well too, cause I think he does want to do well. OMT.. you know Marat was injured most of last year, considering this he has done very well so far for the year so far, he was a finalist at the AO and Estroil, SF in MCarlo, and QF Cincy.... thats not bad, it takes time to come bad, hes been trying to tell us that now for months, it takes time to get a feel for the ball, to get the rhythm, give him a break. Look at Guga, look how long its taking him to get back on track Look at Hewitt, he was not injured last year, he has been having a hell of a time getting back into it, he has okay results, Finals Cincy, SF Queens and Hamburg, and QF RG and Wimby.... he too was # one, and should be winning more matches, and look at JCFerrero what happened to him, I had said before last year he was been touted as the next best thing since slice bread.......he has not done much this year, and its only now he is supposed to be injured, okay he was a finalist at Rotterdam, SF AO and Valencia big deal....... Okay I have rambled enough, but I think Marat deserves more credit than he is getting. As Marat said I know I know.....lol just one more thing, Marat's comment about Dinara having a coach and no more mum is a good thing.........he's right, she needs to move on, and mum needs to move over......
