11 August 6:40 pm Bad Day for the Safins
The number one seed of the Idea Prokom Open Marat Safin outplayed by the virtually unknown Spaniard Marco Lopez 3:6, 2:6.
Presently the player from Spain is ranked 131 in the ATP Tour Entry System and Safin is 14th.
Lopez was in control of the match from the very beginning and it is the Spaniard we will be seeing in the quarterfinal. He will be competing against Juan Monaco from Argentina, who defeated the Barcelona Olympic gold medallist Marc Rosset.
Dinara Safina, Marat's younger sister and IPO 2002 winner lost earlier today.
I'm soooooo happy that he played today and I wasn't forced to watch this match tomorrow!!!

Lord Magda I am so happy to hear you say this, I was feeling so bad for you, but you are so right, it would have been an awful match for you to have witnessed. Thank god too you did not go to the expense of buying tix for Friday. Thanks too again for the report.

Geez Marat...
I've already posted on MensTennisForum, so my anger is gone.
I thought that this tournament would be the one where he actually won! I'm a fool...

"My friend, there is nothing so sexy as a woman who is angry. Perhaps when she is even throwing things." - Marat Safin himself. What I'm implying is: Marat tanked precisely to get Magda angry... and another million of safinettes... Well well Vass, I sure ain't no safinette and I sure as hell ain't feeling very sexy but for sure I am mad as hell. Yeah this I can relate to, and you are so right 'this is all impossible to grasp, stupid or just pathetic, Agh!

Yeah this I can relate to, and you are so right 'this is all impossible to grasp, stupid or just pathetic, Agh! yeah it is impossible to grasp! I mean what's going on?? Why did he come to Sopot?? To tank the match?? And if he didn't tank then what's wrong with his game recently?? I know that sometimes he loses to Mr. Nobody, but not like this!!! I haven't seen the match but it seemed like he didn't exist at all!! If he keeps playing like this there's no way he will make good results in the Olympisc or US Open. Don't know what bothers him but he definitely needs to change something in his game/attitude.

ow come on guys, of course this loss was dissappointing and unexpected. But I'm convinced he didn't tank the match. He wouldn't do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![/b] . Surely he'll have to defend himself on the press conference, unless ofcourse he'll skip that on the grounds of headache or something. LOL, he did a pressconference his pic is already up on the site, the link just isn't active yet. Took hours yesterday before they finally made that link. Hope they do it faster today. I'd like to know what the hell happened!

Just rushed to my computer after practice to see how Marat did today....I didn't expect to see this result. I know it's pretty tough to switch from hardcourts to clay, big difference in surfaces. Maybe his timing was just off today that's what happens when you switch to a slower surface so soon after playing on a hardcourt. Now he has to adjust his timing all over again for Olympic hardcourt. I have to wonder if there is something going on with him, which none of us will probably ever know about, that is making him play with such inconsistency. Who knows what goes on in his head but when you step onto the court the only thing in his head should be a game plan, maybe he should have switched to plan B today.

After reading Magda's post I take back what I said about his timing, turns out it was bad luck instead.

hmmm, very disappointing results for sure and i join Vass this time. It's hard to admit but i hope he was tanking. If he wasn't, well.... . And if he was, i'd like to ask him why he went to Sopot to do that? the draw was an easy one (and for that reason i too thought he would win the final)... if he planned to tank, then why go to Sopot? why not go to Athens and prepare for the Olympics on hard courts like the others? okay, i shut up now, don't want to say something i would regret. Waiting for his post match interview with impatience
