I was there. The crowd was pulling for him and screaming for him to get it together, but he was determined to act like a jerk, and nothing could stop him. I didn't boo. I started laughing after witnessing a farce. Very disappointing.

Oh, Marat...wish he would stop acting like a jerk..there's a thin line between being an interesting and pathetic player for him lately...at least like McEnroe, when he does that, he uses it to produce great results. sorry for my english, too

EDIT: While watching Marat's before-match warm-ups (around 6pm, match started 7pm), some guys with official badges and two huge cameras approached to me and asked if I could be interviewed about this tourny. Did they overhear that I flew almost 30 hours to come here? So they picked me? I had no clue. And they are with American Express sponsoring this event and would like to put up something on to USOPEN.ORG. I said I was wanna focus on watching my fav practice and they kept persuading "isn't having your fav in the background talking about him and the tourny such a great idea" . I was like couldn't say no in the end. So, I answered questions and mentioned Marat alot with Marat behind me practicing with Acasuso. Upon finishing, I was instructed to sign and put my information. I don't know where or when they are gonna put it on. If they really show it, well, I guess I have contributed a little and hopefully Marat is happy about that . (if this is the wrong place to post this, please let me know) that is good news, justsafin! you are a star now , im the one excited for you

Seems like I am the only one being "prejudiced" or "spoiling him".......Maybe you guys are right, already deleted my previous post. Just forget what I said. Still, good luck in LA, Washington and US open. I won't say anything about Cincy. Feel so lonely.......

You guys kept the "best" part from me, LOL!!! I went to bed after set 1 (wisest choice last night ) and I woke up to a "foot fault"-SMS (and read all the foot fault crap here now) - but no one told me he actually called the match quits before it was over, just walking off after a 1st service fault by Mitya. Hilarious!!! Well, in a very bad, twisted, ridiculous way. Somebody already said "Get a life" somewhere further up - I second that!!!!!!! Go fishing! Read romance novels! Watch movies! DON'T play tennis if all you can do is getting pissed off and making a fool of yourself. Just an idea... what a horrible score Marat take her advice and don't touch your racket for the next days, just fly to westcoast , bayarea is really nice, not as hot as LA , nice fishing areas around and you can take a car and drive pacific coast highway down to LA.

A new day dawns ... and I've had a good sleep. Ok Big Yin, I'll give you that last point. I think Dima may have served an ace and the match WAS over - he'd no doubt have challenged it if it had gone against him. But please, please try to get that temper under control. It won't change a decision on court, so just try to channel it. Your foot was very, very close to the line and it was a bad time to call, linesman should have let it go - but after it was called, it wouldn't have been reversed anyway. The US Open beckons. I expect you to do well, as should you. If nothing else, maybe take from this match that it was only a couple of points that decided it. But ultimately it was your temper that cost you the match. No more tantrums, let your tennis do the talking. You can come off the naughty step now. You've probably beat yourself up around the head all night anyway ... and take up gardening when you retire. It'll relax you. ;D

I think everyone has pretty much summed it up, but i am in the mood for a little rant Foot Fault - they warned you, you didnt listen, what do you expect?! i couldnt help but laugh at first, but then it got ridiculous, move your foot back and GET OVER IT! You were playing fine and suddenly your head exploded and there was no return Fina Point - now this was just immature and unprofessional. i NEVER say this about you but you acted like an idiot! the least you could do is just play the point, no need to throw it in. Poor Dima, he looked completely baffled. and when have you EVER been booed off court - that just shows you, you were wrong. I was a lot more pissed off last night (i sacrificed sleep for this! ) but after sleep, all i can say is you better make it up to ALL YOUR FANS in LA and washington!! You are lucky you are so good looking that I can forgive you, even though you acted like a 5 year old out there

Poor Dima, he looked completely baffled. and when have you EVER been booed off court - that just shows you, you were wrong. I think he was right on that final point: the ball looked in, even Dima was advancing to the net to check the mark, but Marat did that for him - as he always does - the ball was in, it was an ace and he just accepted that - he only refused to formalise it and go through the challenge and all. This is not the first time Marat gives a serve point to his opponent - he did the same thing exactly during his match against Mathieu last year in DC - and had the score been different, everybody would have applauded him for his sportsmanship instead of booing him...he was bood previously - recall Valencia 2006, when he refused to shake Almagro's hand ? and in that case he definitely did not deserve it. The whole arguing thing was uncalled for, but that's how he's always been...

Marat Safin gives up on match point, Tursunov wins in straight sets 7/29/08 3:48 AM | Cheryl Murray
A normal first round match in Cincinnati turned into a bit of a scandal as Marat Safin walked off the court before the match was officially over.
The match started off rocky for the mercurial Russian. Safin’s first point resulted in a double fault due to a foot fault. The Russian would continue to have issues with foot faulting throughout the match and eventually resulted in a complete meltdown, while his Davis Cup teammate and opponent Dmitry Tursunov looked on calmly.
Despite the foot faults, Safin played well enough in the first set to push a tiebreak. Safin even got the first minibreak, but it was quickly erased and Tursunov went about the business of taking the first set at five in the breaker.
Safin continued to stick with Tursunov until 4-4 in the second set. At 30-30 on Safin’s serve another foot fault was called, sending the Russian into a rage with chair umpire Cedric Mourier. He lost that service game and essentially gave up as Tursunov served for the match. On match point, Tursunov hit a serve that was called out by the linesperson. Safin walked to the net and called it in in order to get off the court more quickly. The crowd treated Safin to a hearty round of boos for giving up.
This was a terrible display from Safin. He essentially forfeit his place in the Cincinnati draw - I have nothing good to say about it.
Safin needs to get his priorities checked.

Having read all the above posts I feel I am quite glad I didn't wait up to see the match (I was really really tired is my excuse). Sounds like he had a bad day at the office as he has often put it and just wanted to get off quickly when he knew he'd lost.
Not that this is an excuse. The match is never over until it's called and I can understand the crowd booing. Poor Dima must have wondered what had happened. Maybe last night it was just his turn to be the calm one - remember Nottingham where Dima had a row and walked off leaving a bemused doubles partner to be disqualified? At least Marat was only responsible for himself last night. (Although I hope Gumy gave him a good talking to)
Let's just hope he gets himself some calm vibes and has a good chill out before the next match and starts afresh. We all have bad days, but we also have to be professional in our everyday lives.
As Mary would say - no more tantrums Big Yin!
