From top tennis ace, to celebrity Poker champion, now the next Tiger Woods.
Kafelnikov to make golfing debut
Former world number one tennis player Yevgeny Kafelnikov will make his debut on golf's European Tour at this week's Russian Open in Moscow. Kafelnikov, who retired from tennis last year, received a wildcard entry into the $500,000 tournament.
"We felt that Yevgeny's presence will greatly enhance the image of our tournament," Russian Golf Association president Konstantin Kozhevnikov said.
Kafelnikov won the French and Australian Opens in his tennis career.
He will follow in the footsteps of another former tennis world number one Ivan Lendl.
The Czech-born American, winner of eight Grand Slam titles in tennis, birdied his first hole on his debut in the 1996 Czech Open but then bombed to an 82, missing the cut.
Kafelnikov also said he hoped to become a professional poker player after retiring from tennis.

I saw him at DC last month and Zhenya has put on a lot of weight. Other more positive news about him. I have been watching broadcasts from Rogers Cup Montreal on our cable sports channel, which shows EVERYTHING more or less major tennis related (they are really good ;D) and Zhenya together with our famous female ex-tennis player and a very well known veteram journalist Anna Dmitrieva is doing commentary for matches. He is actually really good!!!! I truly enjoy listening to him comment....very subtle, down to a point and a brilliant sense of humour. Good job Zhenya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is good to hear this about Zhenya. A lot of ex sportsmans are very boring and talk some kind of crap if they are co-commentators

Kafelnikov makes nightmare debut
Former world number one tennis player Yevgeny Kafelnikov finished last as he endured a nightmare European Tour golf debut at the Russian Open in Moscow. The Russian, who retired from tennis last year, carded dismal rounds of 88 and 96 to end the event 40 over par.
His 184-total was also 40 shots off the cut and a massive 50 behind Sweden's second-round leader Fredrik Widmark.
Kafelnikov, who received a wildcard into the event, won the French and Australian Opens in his tennis career.
He followed in the footsteps of another former tennis world number one Ivan Lendl.
The Czech-born American, winner of eight Grand Slam titles in tennis, birdied his first hole on his debut in the 1996 Czech Open but then bombed to an 82, missing the cut.

Yevgeny Kafelnikov, making his seniors' debut in Eindhoven this week, spoke to the Blackrock Tour of Champions about his bid to get back into playing shape after gaining almost 80 pounds since his retirement in 2003.
"I put two photos together, one when I was playing and a recent one, and it was like looking at two different people,” he said. "I said to myself, ‘no, you can’t do that to your body, it’s not going to last long if you do’. So I needed to gather myself."
He has lost 15 lbs in the last six months and indicated he would like to play regularly on the seniors circuit next year. "Slowly, slowly, slowly I am getting into better shape and hopefully if I get more opportunities to play next year, I will definitely perform better," he said. "I wanted to get away from all the pressure that I had during the years when I was playing, and I really did that. But then, after one or two years of being away in the shadows where nobody sees you, you don’t talk to people or to the media, it becomes boring. As you get older and wiser you see life from a different angle and your perspective changes, definitely."

Well no better way to prepare himself than practising with Marat last couple of weeks
Goran has his say on Zhenya My friendly advice to Yevgeny this week, which he asked for, was to lose another 10 kilos because he’s playing unbelievable tennis and when he loses 10 kilos he’s going to move well and he’s going to be more and more competitive
