PARIS, May 26 (Reuters) - Argentina's Jose Acasuso ended the challenge of the American men at the French Open by stunning second seed Andy Roddick 3-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 8-6 in the second round on Thursday.
Roddick's demise left the U.S. without a man in the third round at Roland Garros for the second successive year.
The second seed appeared to be heading for a straight sets victory but the momentum swung Acasuso's way when Roddick dropped his serve midway through the third set.
Both players struggled with cramps in the deciding set and had to receive treatment from the trainer but in the end, Acasuso's desire to win proved stronger.
The 62nd-ranked Acasuso got the decisive break at 7-6 with a scorching passing shot before sealing Roddick's fate with a forehand winner.
Acasuso's three hours 21 minutes victory put him into the third round of a grand slam event for the first time in his career and he will next face Italy's Filippo Volandri.

Although he said he was very tired because he`s having some health problems (that I`ve already tried to explai, lol).... and he keeps on saying he`s not playing well. I liked it Gastón!!!! David Nalbandian (10) d. Mario Ancic 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-3 You`re great David.... and in 3 sets, too!!! ;D And David is not happy with his tennis, too. This guys are funny!!! I know that maybe they didn`t play their best, but they won!! Well, ...... maybe they`re having high ambitions about RG and they know they should be playing better. It`s nice to hear them having this attitude...., but I hope they are not looking for perfection..., that`s not a good thing to think about when you`re oncourt.... No pressure, please, boys!!! PARIS, May 27 (Reuters) - Defending champion Gaston Gaudio enjoyed another easy workout to reach the French Open fourth round with a 6-4 6-4 6-3 win over Spain's Felix Mantilla on Friday.
The Argentine fifth seed, playing his first match in four days after receiving a walkover in the previous round, was never really tested by Mantilla.
He clinched victory with a drop volley after 2-1/2 hours and next meets another Spaniard, 20th seed David Ferrer.

I saw the last part of Gaudio's match, taped, and thought he played really really well, very smooth, great shots, very impressive, I was very happy for him that he won this way.
