February 7, 2006 © Getty Images Stosur Ascends To Doubles No.1 Ranking ST PETERSBURG, FL - After an impressive victory this past week at the Toray Pan Pacific Open with partner Lisa Raymond, Australia’s Samantha Stosur ascends to the world No.1 ranking in doubles, becoming the 21st player in Sony Ericsson WTA Tour history to hold the top ranking in the doubles discipline. Stosur vaulted from No.3 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour doubles ranking last week to become No.1 for the first time in her career, displacing Zimbabwe’s Cara Black. Black held the top spot for 14 consecutive weeks since October 17, 2005. Stosur and Raymond’s title win in Tokyo also moves Lisa Raymond up a spot to No.2, while Black moves down to No.3. The 21-year-old, born in Brisbane but a resident of the Gold Coast, captured her first Tour doubles title of 2006 last week at Tokyo [Pan Pacific], having won seven titles last season, including her first Grand Slam at the US Open (also w/Raymond). The pair reached its second major doubles final at the Australian Open, but were runners-up to Yan Zi and Zheng Jie. Stosur has been complimenting her excellent doubles play with an impressive start to 2006 in singles, reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open as well as her first Tier I singles quarterfinal in Tokyo (she moved from No.72 to No.51 in singles this week).

Hewitt sets up clash with Arthurs Sportal Australian Lleyton Hewitt has set up a quarter-final showdown with compatriot Wayne Arthurs but Mark Philippoussis has been bundled out at the SAP Open in San Jose. Hewitt, the tournament's third seed, outclassed American qualifier Sam Warburg 6-4 6-3, while Arthurs upset seventh seed Dmitry Tursunov 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 for just his second win and first ATP quarter-final berth this year. Hewitt holds a 3-0 advantage over Arthurs but the pair has not clashed since 2001 in Sydney when the former world number one prevailed in three sets. But Mark Philippoussis was unable to advance, the 2003 Wimbledon finalist winning just five games as he plunged to a second round loss to Swede Robin Soderling. Top seed Andy Roddick overcame a second set hiccup to move one step closer to claiming his third consecutive SAP Open with a 6-3 1-6 6-3 victory over Dane Kenneth Carlsen. Belgian Kristof Vliegen defeated American Justin Gimelstob 7-6 (7-1) 4-6 6-1 to set up a quarter-final date with Vincent Spadea, while German world number 84 Bjorn Phau overcame American Brian Wilson 7-5 7-5. In the last match on Thursday, Scottish teenager Andy Murray accounted for Chinese Taipei's Yeu-Tzuoo Wang 6-4 6-2 to advance to his first quarter-final of the year. Second round results from the SAP Open in San Jose 1-Andy Roddick (USA) bt Kenneth Carlsen (Denmark) 6-3 1-6 6-3 3-Lleyton Hewitt (Australia) bt Sam Warburg (USA) 6-4 6-3 Wayne Arthurs (Australia) bt 7-Dmitry Tursunov (Russia) 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 Robin Soderling (Sweden) bt Mark Philippoussis (Australia) 6-2 6-3 Bjorn Phau (Germany) bt Brian Wilson (USA) 7-5 7-5 Kristof Vliegen (Belgium) bt Justin Gimelstob (USA) 7-6 (7-1) 4-6 6-1 Andy Murray (Great Britain) bt Yeu-Tzuoo Wang 6-4 6-2

Of course sweetie There are threads for almost every important player here, why not a thread for such an important country for tennis as Australia is? One of the greatest tennis tradition, a wonderful country that loves almost every sport that can be practise there.. I really admire that of Australians. And I agree there are plenty of aussies in this forum and they are allways welcome ;D And as far as I´m concerned, I rather have threads by nations than by players here..., but that´s just me ;D ;D ;D

Thanks Lau , I was getting tired of adding stuff to a bec and lleyton thread , and yes we do love our sports and will get behind any sportsperson when they don on the green and gold... BTW , A national thread can encompass far more players I feel that they are lonely enough as it is is, put them all together and you have community spirit.... I do pay out on Lleyton but always tongue in cheek...I don't think that I would be as fiery as him but then I read that he sent sms's to the boys so they knew he was supporting them and that is nice..

Hewitt reaches San Jose ATP final AFP February 18, 2006 AFP - Feb 18, 6:37 pm EST SAN JOSE, United States (AFP) - Australian Lleyton Hewitt encountered little resistance from Vincent Spadea as he rolled into the final of the 355,000-dollar ATP tournament with a straight-set win. Hewitt, the third seed, preserved his perfect record against Spadea with a 6-3, 6-4 victory that took his record over the American to 5-0. In the final, he'll face either top-seeded American Andy Roddick - the two-time defending champion - or British teenager Andy Murray. Hewitt is playing here for the first time since beating Andre Agassi for the crown in 2002. Roddick, who reached the semi-finals with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Germany's Bjorn Phau on Friday, was due to take on Murray on Saturday night. Murray defeated Sweden's Robin Soderling in three sets to reach the final four. The Scot, who is facing Roddick for the first time, does not have an ATP tournament title on his resume, falling to world number one Roger Federer in his only career final in Bangkok last year. A followup to some of the last posts in Australian Open 2006. As we commented , Alicia Molik will be competing in a TV Series called Dancing with the Stars. You can check it out on this link below or wait for me to post how Alicia is doing... au.yahoo.com/dancing-with-the-stars/couples/It may also interest some of you, Some of the current contestants : Ex Russian compatriots Kostya Tszyu Sergei As well as Simone Warne soon to be ex-wife of Australian Cricketer and chronic sms'er Shane Warne ;D Alicia Molik - Biography The pin-up girl of Australian tennis, Alicia Molik, 25, secured a WTA number eight world ranking after beating Venus Williams to qualify for the quarter finals at the 2005 Australian Open. She had just won her previous 18 matches, including the Adidas International in Sydney. Alicia however lost the quarter final in three sets to Lindsay Davenport, but undeterred headed overseas with coach David Taylor to play in American tournaments with hopes of breaking into the world top five. Growing up in the Adelaide suburb of Kidman, Alicia, was always a tomboy, playing with older brother Richard and joining the school soccer, football and cricket teams. She was strong and competitive even then. Her mum enrolled Alicia and Richard in a tennis camp one school holidays and her talent became evident. She joined Seaside Tennis Club near Henley Beach and there she met a young Lleyton Hewitt. Alicia was teamed up with Lleyton in the South Australian junior squads and years later was again paired with him for mixed doubles representing Australia in the Hopman Cup. Alicia has travelled the world playing tennis on the ITF circuit since she was 16 years old. She boasts 13 career singles and eight doubles titles and has been a key player in the Australian Federation Cup Team since 1998. Alicia represented Australia at the 2000 Sydney and the 2004 Athens Olympics, winning a bronze medal. Sadly, in March 2005 in Miami, she picked up a debilitating inner ear viral infection that affects her balance, vision and energy levels. Between April and October, she played nine tournaments, losing in the first round eight times. In October, the illness forced her to withdraw from the Zurich Open while defending her title. Alicia's world ranking is now 28. While recuperating in Melbourne, she joined Seven’s commentary team at the Australian Open Tennis in January 2006. Good luck Alicia ;D
