Wild days over: Scud to wed his teen love

TENNIS star Mark Philippoussis has become engaged to teenage model girlfriend Alexis Barbara after a whirlwind five-month romance.


Philippoussis told friends he proposed to the property tycoon heiress in the US late last week, but the news was supposed to remain secret, The Daily Telegraph learned yesterday.

"Obviously it has come as a bit of a shock but Mark is very much in love with Alexis," a friend said yesterday.


"We're all very happy the relationship has gone to the next level.


"It might come as a shock to a lot of people but those of us who know Mark are aware he is very loyal to his family and loved ones."


Barbara, who turned 18 in January, was a teenage college calendar model.


The couple are currently based in Florida, where Philippoussis trains.


Barbara was accompanied to Australia by her mother Ana earlier this year during Philippoussis' failed Australian Open campaign.


It is understood members of Australia's Davis Cup team, currently in Sydney, are aware of the engagement.


His manager Brian Cooney did not return calls last night.


The hasty engagement caps a month of organised nuptials in the world of Australian tennis after Lleyton Hewitt popped the question to girlfriend Bec Cartwright following the Australian Open.


Cartwright was by Hewitt's side at the Sydney International Tennis Centre at Homebush yesterday as the tennis star continued his preparation for Australia's first-round Davis Cup tie against Austria on Friday.


The couple's affection was clear as they spent time holding hands and laughing between Hewitt's court time.


Barbara is the latest in a long line of glamorous girlfriends for Philippoussis, who broke pop queen Delta Goodrem's heart when he ended their nine-month relationship late last year.


At the time Philippoussis became involved with hotel heiress Paris Hilton, before developing a relationship with Barbara over the summer.


The tennis star has also previously been involved with Anna Kournikova, Hollywood starlet Tara Reid and French model Melanie Maudran.


Goodrem has since moved on to a new relationship with British pop star Brian McFadden.


A family friend of Barbara's told The Daily Telegraph in January how Philippoussis had visited the teenage model in Florida and New York and her family "loved him".


Barbara lives on her own in New York after quitting school to pursue modelling and acting.


After a bitter split with Goodrem, Philippoussis claimed he wanted to focus solely on tennis before appearing at the Hopman Cup in Perth with Barbara on his arm.


While his love life has continually flourished, on the tennis court Philippoussis has slipped further into oblivion, with his world ranking slumping as low as 201 earlier this year.

Dimples? Check. Money? Check. Loves his mom? Check. So why is tennis superstar Mark Philippoussis looking for love? "I am so shy," he tells PEOPLE. "I would just really like to meet someone."

NBC to the rescue. This week, PEOPLE has learned, the network will name Philippoussis as star of Age of Love, a new Bachelor-esque summer series with a twist.

In this mating game, half the women are in their 20's and half in their 40's. "Age doesn't matter to me," says Philippoussis, 30. "All the women are beautiful."

He didn't always feel that way: At first he was unnerved by the notion of making out with older women. "Until now, the oldest woman I've ever gone out with was four years younger than me," he says, noting that the youngest, a 19-year-old, was 10 years his junior.

Once ranked among the world's top tennis stars, Philippoussis has been sidelined by a series of knee surgeries. But worse, he says, he's been single since last August. And he wants the world to know that despite tab reports, he has "never, ever dated Paris Hilton or Tara Reid."

In hopes of returning to Wimbledon's Centre Court in June – he won in 2003 – Philippousis has been playing tennis four times a week with friend Gavin Rossdale at the Beverly Hills estate the rocker shares with wife Gwen Stefani and son Kingston.

Rossdale is one of a handful of people who knew about Age of Love. "Gavin said to me, 'Wow. You could change the dating habits of all mankind!' " Philippousis says.

But for now, he's just "a simple guy who wants a simple girl." One who must meet certain standards: If she smokes, forget it. Ditto for anyone who doesn't like dogs. Says Philippoussis, "I just don't see how that could ever work."

That's because his 4-month-old Rottweiler puppy, Kya, is the No. 1 girl in his life right now. "When I turn out the lights, she gets up on the bed and puts her front paws on my shoulders and she kisses me goodnight," he says. "Now that's love." [okay -- awwww ... but still -- "reality" *cough* tv? really??]

You can watch the show online once its starts for free or for now some previews of it, for those who like a joke. Then I wondered, good thing Marat's knee healed, can u imagine him on this type of thing? I dunno this is really awkward for me.

I don't think Marat would do something like it even if his knee didn't heal....i just don't see him as the type...first of all, he likes his privacy very much to get into something like this...second of all, he doesn't need a show to "help" him find "true love" , he can well find it all by himself without anyone's help and i think he'd much like it that way...
