Nadal pulls out of Oz Open
2005 Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal pulls out of the Australian Open due to a calf injury. The 19-year-old world number two has not played since picking up the injury - which has since caused a calf muscle strain - at October's Madrid Masters.
"It's clear that if I went to Australia I wouldn't be at my best level in tennis terms or physically," the Spaniard told sports paper Marca.
Nadal plans to return at the tournament in Marseille on 13 February.
He made the decision to withdraw from the year's first Grand Slam event after practicing with Gustavo Kuerten for 90 minutes in Barcelona on Monday.
I'm a pessimist," he said, despite beating the Brazilian in their session. "Training for an hour and a half is not the same as playing a five-set match in a Grand Slam."
Marat Safin remains highly unlikely to defend his Australian Open title having said last week that he needs "a miracle" to overcome a serious knee injury in time.

I am afraid it will not be that easy considering his foot...5 set matches are not that easy...however I somehow think Rog is about to win his first GS in 2006 or maybe a miracle will happen and a Russian will win it ;D

Nadal Leads Contenders for Laureus Newcomer of the Year Rafael Nadal has been pinned by Laureus as the "hot favourite" to receive a nomination for the academy's prestigious 2006 World Newcomer of the Year Award.
The 19-year-old Spanish sensation rose to prominence last year as he captured the Roland Garros crown, defeating 2005 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Roger Federer en route to the title. Nadal won a circuit-leading 11 titles (tied with Federer) to eclipse the previous teenage record of nine titles achieved by Mats Wilander in 1983, and finished the year ranked World No. 2.
The nominees, to be chosen by a selection panel of the world's leading sports journalists, will be inclusive of participants in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Thus far, other top contenders for Laureus Newcomer include American golfer Paul Creamer and race-car driver Danica Patrick.
The Laureus World Sports Academy will vote by secret ballot for the winner, who will be named during a televised awards ceremony in Barcelona on May 22, 2006.

Nadal forced out of Davis Cup tie Rafael Nadal has been forced out of Spain's first round Davis Cup tie with Belarus because of injury. Nadal is still suffering from the foot injury which caused him to miss the Australian Open and will not be fit in time for the 10 February match.
Spain's line-up features David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo, Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez.
Spain have a good record in the competition - lifting the trophy twice in the past six years.

still a strong team for Spanish but they would have been safer with Nadal. Max Mirniy can be tricky especially during DC

If Belarus play well they will beat Spain. I Still cant get over 2004 when they beat Russia when Marat lost 11-9 in the 5th set. Heartbraking to watch

MADRID, Feb 6 (Reuters) - World number two Rafael Nadal beat Frenchman Fabrice Santoro in an exhibition match in France on Sunday, the first step on his return from an injury lay-off.
The Spaniard injured his left foot while preparing for the Masters Cup in Shanghai in November and has not played a competitive match since winning the Madrid Masters in October.
Wearing protective tape on his ankles, the 19-year-old Nadal beat Santoro 6-2 1-6 10-3 in Tarbes, France, the third set being a super tiebreak format.
The French Open champion will miss Spain's Davis Cup tie against Belarus this weekend and is scheduled to begin his season at the ATP event in Marseille starting on February 13.
"I'm fine, it's better every day, but I'm still not quite there," Nadal was quoted as saying on his website.
His uncle, and coach, Toni said: "He will make his debut in Marseille, on a hardcourt, although we would have liked to begin on clay so that he could gradually gain confidence."
Nadal, who won eight of his 11 titles last year on clay including a maiden grand slam crown at the French Open, said he is not expecting too much.
"It will be difficult at first," Nadal was quoted as saying on the ATP website. "My goal is to arrive at the first two Masters Series events of the year in Indian Wells and Miami in good physical condition."

awwwwwwwww Nadal feared injury would force him to quit 2006-02-07 12:49:01 GMT (Reuters) MADRID, Feb 7 (Reuters) - World number two Rafael Nadal feared a persistent foot injury would force him to quit tennis at the age of 19. "You think of everything, including that at the very worst you won't be able to return to play tennis again," the Spaniard told sports daily Mundo Deportivo on Tuesday. "I have cried many times at home especially when I saw that I couldn't play and the pain wouldn't go away. "I would leave it a few days and try again but the pain would come back. It was a really bad time." Nadal injured his left foot while preparing for the Masters Cup in Shanghai in November, and has not played a competitive match since winning the Madrid Masters in October. The French Open champion played an exhibition match in Tarbes, France, on Sunday where he beat Fabrice Santoro 6-2 1-6 10-3, the third set being a super tiebreak format. He will miss Spain's Davis Cup tie against Belarus this weekend and is scheduled to begin his season at the ATP event in Marseille starting on Feb.13. "I am pleased that we have located the problem and have now taken measures to solve it," Nadal said. "They have made new soles for my shoes and changed the supports for my foot and that seems to be working because I don't have the same kind of pain as before. "I am still a little worried but that is only normal. That won't disappear until I have played a few tournaments." When asked about whether he would change his aggressive, hard-running style Nadal said: "I will try to be more economical with my effort when playing but everyone has their own style and you can't change that."

I was actually quite surprised when I read this article - poor Rafa felt so sorry for him! But on the bright side I think he is confirmed for Marseille as well - the tournament for come backs! I really hope he does well - he is a great player to watch!
