watching tursunov vsguccione @ Medibank international live on tv rite now. he grabbed the first set, woohooo. Go Tursunov! I don't really like Gucc, cos he's relying on his serve (70 something aces. what's up with that?!)

2 Weeks into the season and we already have 2 Russian winners of ATP tournaments first Misha now Dima. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats! Good luck at AO Mitya Sydney, Australia January 12, 2008 Tursunov Edges Guccione for Sydney Title Russian Dmitry Tursunov claimed his fourth career ATP title with a 7-6(3), 7-6(4) victory over Australian wild card Chris Guccione at the Medibank International in Sydney on Saturday evening. In the first meeting between the pair, neither player had a break point opportunity as the match was decided in two tie-breaks. Guccione actually won one point more than Tursunov in the encounter, and fired 15 aces to Tursunov’s six, but it was the 25-year-old Russian who came out on top after one hour and 23 minutes. All of Tursunov’s three previous titles have also come on hardcourt, winning in Mumbai 2006 (d. Berdych), Indianapolis last July (d. Dancevic) and Bangkok last September (d. Becker). He has now compiled a 4-1 lifetime in ATP singles finals, his only loss coming in Los Angeles 2006 on hardcourt (l. to Haas). “I'm not really surprised that there were no breaks, because that's kind of his game," Tursunov said. "He goes for a lot of risky shots on the groundstroke on the returns, and he knows that he's not going to get broken too often. That's pretty much the scenario. That was very expected. “This week is, I think a result of work that I've been putting in on getting everything together. What I've been doing really well is preparing for my matches and going out with a certain plan of what I want to achieve or what I want to do on the court. I think that is been helping me to do well, so I'm hoping that I'm going to be able to do that as well in Melbourne.” With the victory, California resident Tursunov becomes the first Russian player to lift the Medibank International trophy since Alex Metreveli won in 1972 representing the Soviet Union. In defeating Stanislas Wawrinka, top seed Richard Gasquet, Sebastien Grosjean, Fabrice Santoro and Chris Guccione to claim victory, World No. 35 Tursunov fired 33 aces to just eight double faults. The Russian (pictured right) is now 7-1 lifetime in Sydney, having reached the quarterfinals on his debut in 2006 (l. to Andreev). Guccione’s appearance in the final marked the first time a wild card has reached the title match in Sydney since Jason Stoltenberg in 2000. He was the only one of three wild cards to pass the first round this week. "I thought it was a strange game not much in it at all," Guccione said afterwards. "He played better tie-breakers than me in the end. At the end he came up with two great returns and a good pass. So he just played a little bit more solid and won a couple return points in the tie-breaks." The 22-year-old was optimistic looking forward: "This puts me back into the Top 100 and hopefully jump start my year and have a good Aussie Open. I definitely think top 50 is achievable. I think I've shown I can beat these guys on a consistent basis. Hopefully I can keep playing like this throughout the year." The Melbourne resident was contesting his second career ATP singles final, having finished runner-up in Adelaide last year (l. to Novak Djokovic in three sets). His run in Sydney is just the second time the World No. 125 Guccione has made it to the quarterfinals or better of an ATP singles tournament. Guccione’s serve has been exceptional this week. The 6’7’’ Australian has fired 88 aces in total in a campaign that has seen him defeat sixth seed Lleyton Hewitt and fourth seed Tomas Berdych (saved one M.P), amongst others. He now stands at 7-4 lifetime at this event.

LMAO Jen I was gonna ask... ;D .... yeah, by the end of the week I'll probably regret it, but once Marat was finished, a couple others were almost done ... then once those were, Dima was almost finished -- and HAD to see what was going to happen with that ... get in a trance sometimes watching the scoreboard too ... had dozed off enough earlier, then fortunate to have the rest of the morning off to sleep ;D

Great match!!! I don't know what happened in the first 2 sets. Went for something to eat and watched him lose the 2nd on the scoreboard. Then we thought we would go and cheer him on and hopefully he will get through the 3rd.
Well he got through the 3rd, 4th and 5th, easily! We like to think that we were his good luck charms ;D ;D ;D ;D

he was totally winning that match too. he was all over querry, had the break in the third and all the momentum, querry totally looked lost and bored. then for NO reason mitya decided that life sucked and he was mr grumpy pants with EVERYTHING! his mood (didn't get any sleep the night before?) totally lost him a very winnable match. seriously querry was already thinking about showering in the locker room he was so over it and then mitya juts gave him back the break and another to boot. one of the most frustrating matches i have ever watched. and mitya kept gettingirritated by ppl walking in and sittiing down or leaving. why focus on them?! grr! my b/f was all like, i thought you said this guy was good? next time mitya i'll be there with bells on and MAKE you concentrate! at least he'll be focussed for davis cup...!
(breathe mackie! remember it is just a game!...)
