KOLKATA, India, Sept 25 (Reuters) - Russian top seed Anastasia Myskina ended her 2005 title drought by crushing Croatian Karolina Sprem in the Kolkata Open final on Sunday. The 2004 French Open champion beat her seventh seeded opponent 6-2 6-2, capping an impressive week without dropping a set. Sprem, 20, who upset second seed Elena Likhovtseva, Myskina's compatriot and doubles partner, was a bundle of nerves as she struggled even to hold serve. Myskina, the world number 12, raced to a 4-0 lead in the first set before Sprem broke back in the fifth game to edge to 2-4, but the fightback was all too brief. The Russian began the second set nervously to fall back 2-1 as neither managed to hold serve in the first four games. However, Myskina shifted gears at that stage while the Croatian, ranked a modest 81, lapsed into many unforced errors. Myskina, who last year became Russia's first woman grand slam singles champion, was thrilled to secure her first title of the season. "I can say this has been really, really special because I haven't won all year," she told reporters. "My goal for this year was to be back in the top 10. I really hope that is going to happen." WTA Open: Anastasia Myskina wins double crown
Kolkata, Sep 25 (PTI) Russian Anastasia Myskina made merry with a double crown, bagging her first singles title of the season and then following it up to vanquish the Uberoi sisters - Shikha and Neha by teaming up with compatriot Elena Likhovtseva at the USD 1,70,000 WTA Sunfeast open here today. Giving a fine exhibition of cool temperament and controlled aggression, top seed Myskina began the day with a straight set annihilation of Croatia's Karolina Sprem in the singles final.
The world number 12 Myskina maintained a stranglehold throughout the tie save some brief resistance from Sprem in the stages of the second set to chalk out 6-2, 6-2 win in about an hour at the Netaji Indoor Stadium.
A sort while later, she hit the courts again with Likhovtseva to streamroll the Uberoi siblings 6-1, 6-0 in a completely one sided doubles final, much to the dismay of the strong 3,000 fans at the stadium.
The Uberoi's could do little in the face of some classy tennis from their fancied opponents and repeatedly displayed a lack of coordination and sent easy winners astray.
In the singles final, Myskina seemed unstoppable, hitting an array of forehand winners, as her rival looked tentative on her serve and failed to find the measure of the court.
Sprem executed some fine shots, but drowned her efforts in a sea of unforced errors.
In the first set, the 24 year old Russian broke Sprem in the second and fourth games to open up a 4-0 lead, but was broken back in the fifth. PTI
