Dementieva advances to Philadelphia quarter-finals 2005-11-03 03:40:24 GMT (Reuters)
TORONTO, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Russian fourth seed Elena Dementieva eased into the quarter-finals of the Advanta Championships with a 6-3 6-4 victory over German qualifier Angelika Bachman at the Philadelphia event on Wednesday.
Dementieva's second round victory over a stubborn but overmatched opponent ensured a seventh quarter-final appearance in her last eight tournaments.
Also advancing was fellow Russian Nadia Petrova after the sixth-seed defeated qualifier Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus 6-4 6-2 in a first round match.
The victory earned Petrova a second round encounter against her unseeded compatriot Yaroslava Shvedova.
Dementieva and Petrova represent their nation's best chances of a victory at the event after second-seeded Maria Sharapova pulled out on Tuesday with a thumb injury.
Seventh-seeded Czech prospect Nicole Vaidisova continued her run of good form to edge compatriot Klara Koukalova 4-6 6-1 6-4 in their second round match.
With the victory, Vaidisova stretched her winning streak to 17 consecutive matches which includes three title victories in Asia.
In other second-round matches, American Mashona Washington stopped Russian Tatiana Panova 7-6 6-3 and Slovakia's Martina Sucha defeated American Angela Haynes 6-3 6-1.
In a first round match, Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic crushed American Jill Craybas 6-1 6-1.
The Tier 11 indoor hardcourt event offers $585,000 in prize money and the defending champion Amelie Mauresmo of France opens her campaign on Thursday with a second round match against Japan's Ai Sugiyama.

Dementieva clinches finale berth
Elena Dementieva claimed the final place in next week's WTA Championships, beating Kveta Peschke to reach the last four in the Advanta Championships. The fourth seed hit back to win 4-6 6-0 6-3 and will now play fellow Russian Nadia Petrova, who beat Martina Sucha 7-5 7-6 in a gritty encounter.
Petrova, seeded six, won her first WTA title in Austria last week having been defeated four times in finals.
Dementieva has played in every WTA Championships since 2000.
This year she was aided by the absence of Venus Williams, who has not played since September because of a knee injury.
Lindsay Davenport, Kim Clijsters, defending champion Maria Sharapova, Amelie Mauresmo, Mary Pierce, Patty Schnyder and Petrova are the other players to have qualified.

NEW YORK, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Amelie Mauresmo of France won her third consecutive Advanta Championship by beating Russian Elena Dementieva 7-5 2-6 7-5 in the final in Philadelphia on Sunday. The third-seeded Mauresmo, the world's fourth-ranked player, won for the third time this season on the eve of the WTA Tour Championships, which start on Tuesday in Los Angeles. "It's a great effort to win this three times in a row," Mauresmo said as the tournament ended a 21-year run in Villanova. Mauresmo had lost in the opening round in both Moscow and Zurich prior to re-establishing her solid play at the tournament, where she has never lost a match. Top-ranked players Lindsay Davenport and Maria Sharapova withdrew from the tournament, paving the way for Mauresmo to win her 18th career WTA title. It was not easy for her, however, as she blew a 4-1 third set lead and was two points away from losing the match before Dementieva double-faulted twice in the 10th game, allowing Mauresmo to tie the final set at 5-5. Mauresmo battled back and won the last two points to deny the Russian her first tournament win of the year. Dementieva was her own worst enemy with 14 double faults. "I'm trying to get better," Dementieva said. Mauresmo joins Steffi Graf as the other three-times winner of the event, which moves to Madrid next year. Graf was champion in 1992, 1995 and 1998. All of the world's top players are due to take part in the WTA Tour Championships. I love this photo ;D ;D
