well he won 4-6 6-1 6-4 (no one has said that yet ) have to agree with ily on this one, need to give credit to ward, he really gave it his all and played some great shots. he was definately not intimidated by the ocasion one bit. marat did make some silly errors, but overall, it was a good 1st win. grass was very slippy so a couple falls but no injury so nothing to worry about. post match interview with the bbc, he said one thing which was lovely. the interviewer asked if he will form a love affair with the grass after all these years. marat's response was something like, love takes time to develop, so yes i hope that this year i will get some good results. i really want to do well this week ;D so positive words from the hunky russian who looks smoking hot in red! DAVAI MARAT! get some good doubles practice in - have to say, he had a lot of success coming into the net, he should do that more often!

Just watched the match - didn't get home early as planned. Thataboy, I'll allow you that first set. Ward played extremely well guys in the first set - his spell in Spain and advice from JCF on how to play the Big Yin was well used. Glad he got a scare - made him focus more in the second and third set. ;D Ironic that the play that got you out of the shit so often was serve and volleying, and some nifty net shots. LMAO. I told you the net practice would pay you back Big Yin. If we'd asked this of you last year, you wouldn't have come up with the goods. You'd have stayed on the baseline, or 6 foot behind it, moaning and mumping. LOL. Some very nice play - could you just make it a bit more aggressive when you hit the volley? You CAN play at the net, so don't be quite so half-hearted, particularly when your opponent is closing in. Keep those feet moving - and bend the knees the way you did today, it worked very well. If the opponent sees you looming at the net jumping around, it's intimidating. Yer a big boy! Use that presence. Plus, on grass (that's the green stuff), you don't need to hit so hard for the lines - it makes you overhit too often. Hit it hard, but hit it shorter and you'll keep the ball in. Serve wide to open up the court. Oh, and can you try a bit more topspin on the ball? I'd like to see the ball kick up on your opponent a bit more as well. Rotate ... slice the serve and then hit through the ball ... topspin ... slice ... vary the shots. Don't rely on power on grass (the green stuff) ... it's more about touch for the winning shots. The weather may change (very likely) during the week as well - you'll need to adjust the hit if the sun goes away and the grass (the green stuff) gets slippy and the pace changes. You've played Gonzo on grass (the green stuff) before - and you lost because you were moaning and mumping about a call (that you won) in the second set ... you were still moaning about that call in the third ... in the fourth ... and in the fifth when you lost. YOU beat you, not Gonzo. No moaning and mumping allowed in the next round of Queens. I'm pleased that you didn't start throwing the racquet around. I would have slapped your arse hard at Wimbles if you had. Gums is in charge of you on the red stuff. I'm in charge on the green stuff (grass). Keep that in mind sunshine. Did you moo today before you went on court? Well done. All together now guys, a mutual moo ... MOOOOOOOO!!!!

I just love reading your comments maryb - you have such sensible things to say/advice to give, but always couched in fun. Keep it up. Even if your Big Yin doesn't read it, it entertains us. You are good at pointing out the positive as well as the problems.

Speaking of Gonzales...He's kinda struggling with Bloomfield, it's 5-5 and 40-40 in the first set, hm I guess London courts help UK players or smth....

Ya, Mary's comments are always interesting to read and useful to Big Yin.
Hope Marat can improve alot in Artois and Wimby. Wimby, he reached the 3rd round. This year he has to get farther to improve his ranking and book the seats for hard court masters series. DAVAI MARAT !

The doubles draw is a bit awkward...they had to play today against Perry and Henley...are they still going to or what?
