I take it that the article referred to is the one I've just read by James Martin (and he is)? The guy's a twat. I wouldn't have given him credence by referring to the article on the official site. All it will do is draw attention to it. I don't doubt it must be irritating to be in the public eye and have everyone commenting on you - I'd hate it. Chin up Big Yin. ;)You've got more talent in your big toe than he'll have in his entire body. You know how to shut him up ... 2008, go for it. PS I'll also stop telling you to go in to the net. ;D Well ...

And another thing, if you don't feel that you are fit for the DC, you're not fit. Stand by your decision. You've more than done your bit over the years for your country. There's always next year. It's a team competition - not down to one guy. If the other guys are playing better, they'd be my choice and I wouldn't pressurise someone into playing if they themselves say that they're not up to it.

It breaks my heart that he will not play Portland more than anything else. I thought he would do pretty well in doubles But then again, I just hope he is there to support the team... it will be needed Good luck Marat We'll be here when you come back Ditto that thought. Marat can (and should) take all the time that he needs. 2008: New year, new beginnings. One step at a time.

www.pr-inside.com/report-marat-safin-may-play-for-r270303.htmSport Report: Marat Safin may play for Russia in the Davis Cup final against United States Print article Print article Refer this article Refer to a friend © AP 2007-10-28 16:04:50 - MOSCOW (AP) - Marat Safin may play for defending champion Russia in the Davis Cup final against the United States. After losing in the first round of the Madrid Masters last week, the two-time Grand Slam champion said he was cutting short his season and would not play in the final in Portland, Oregon, starting Nov. 30. But the ITAR-Tass news agency on Sunday said Russia captain Shamil Tarpischev had suggested a final decision was still to be taken. «Right now, Safin is bothered with pain in his right wrist,» Tarpischev was quoted as saying. «But if in two weeks there is no pain in his hand, Safin by all means will be included in the Russian team. Safin has a 29-18 win-loss record in the Davis Cup and scored a decisive point in Russia's 3-2 win in the final against Argentina in Moscow last year. He skipped the semifinals against Germany in September . Safin and Dmitry Tursunov paired at the Kremlin Cup earlier this month on Tarpischev's request to practice for the Davis Cup doubles match. The Russians won the Kremlin Cup title. Tarpischev said there was nobody to substitute for Safin in the doubles. (only for doubles...??) «Only in this case (with Safin) Russia has a chance for a positive result,» Tarpischev said. He estimated the chances in the match as 65-to-35 in favor of the U.S. Tarpischev said that the quick indoor hardcourt with a fast bounce required powerful baseline play and a difficult serve _ which Safin and Tursunov have. Fourth-ranked Nikolay Davydenko, Mikhail Youzhny and Igor Andreev are also on the Russian roster. Andy Roddick, James Blake and the top-ranked doubles pairing of Bob and Mike Bryan are expected to play for the United States. Russia beat the U.S.3-2 on clay in Moscow in last year's semifinals. The four-player teams will be named 10 days before the match. The Americans have won the Davis Cup title a record 31 times, but not since 1995, when Pete Sampras led the team to victory over Russia in Moscow

I think Tarpischev should really stop making comments about this until he talks to Marat and the latter makes a final decision. I am sick and tired of these speculations

Couldn't agree more - Tarpischev is one outstanding DC captain but sometimes his guessing games go too far!

Totally agree guys, it's pretty unfair to perpetuate this speculation in the media. If the Big Yin feels that he is physically and mentally ready to play DC, he'd be right up there putting himself forward. He's a wee gem at the team effort! It's not going to help him by putting him under the spotlight like this. I made the point earlier that if he doesn't feel he's fit, he's not fit - whatever form that takes. And it's a decision he should stand by. DC is a team tournament - nobody should put pressure on an individual, particularly if that individual has already ruled themselves out of playing in competitive singles! If you're not up to it Big Yin, you're not up to it. If you truly believe that you can give it your all and that it'll benefit the team, go for it. Just don't go in there half-hearted! Signed FG (has a ring to it - Clarence would approve) ;D

PS First day back at work. All that I could expect ... and there is a burst water main in the front garden. 5 stricken working days for them to fix it! In the meantime, I have a pond where I don't want it - and some very expensive trees sitting in water. 5 stricken days! And they tarred over the water valve a couple of months ago when they replaced the road and pavement surface. I had a guy out this morning with a metal detector (!)looking for the valve. What eejits! Thank God I'm on a very large hill - most of the 'fountain' drains off. It's a disgrace - how many people are dying from lack of water and I've got the bloody Niagra Falls flowing happily through my front garden! Good grief. Yip, I'm back at work. The blood pressure is higher than the fountain ...
