Thank you for tuning into another episode of Savoring Safin in the City of Love
, brought to you tonight from the clouds above Bercy where Bia, High Priestess and the Infernal Not Twins, Helene and Emma are floating happily in seventh heaven. ;D ;D
Very special guest appearances from Marat Safin and Dima Tursunov.
Today went by really quickly. I got to Bercy first to get some info about tickets for tomorrow. Helene and Emma joined me around 12 and we got everything sorted out. We’ve got tickets for tomorrow. ;D
Then we went straight to Court Two where Marat and Mitya would be playing their doubles. Bjorkman and Miryni were playing against Cedmak and Damm first. The three of us moved quickly and managed to get perfect seats right across from the ump.
Apparently Miryni and Bjorkman are supposed to be quite good but they played really badly in the first set which they lost 6/2. They got it together after that and won the second set tie break and then the Super Tie Break. I think it finished 14-12. Something like that anyways.
It was quite good actually. I’ve never watched a lot of doubles and it was fascinating. I had a very blond moment (no offence to the blonds out there). At one stage it looked like Bjorkman and Mirnyi were going to lose really easily.
So I got a text saying, well I guess Cedmak and Damm want you to have the drool fest sooner than you hoped. It wasn’t till about 15 minutes later that I realized that Damm and not Damn was the name of the guy playing with Cedmak.
*hides* What can I say, haven’t been getting enough sleep.
Finally Bjorkman and Miryni and their opponents left and Marat and Dima arrived.
They were both wearing white and looking extremely hot. They lost the toss and Dima says “Can I challenge that?” ;D ;D
Marat and Dima were sitting right opposite me. In fact Marat was directly in front of me so I spent the changeovers staring into his eyes. ;D ;D
What to say about the doubles? Their hearts weren’t in it. And old habits die hard. You could tell that they are both very used to playing singles and doubles is not their cup of tea at all. At one stage, between games, a bunch of people started leaving and Marat goes.
“They didn’t like the game.”
Then he shrugged and did that little half smile thing. It was hilarious. ;D ;D
It’s not even that they played that badly. They just couldn’t finish points off cause their opponents were really on the ball, pulling out crazy volleys and passing shots from everywhere.
And like I said, Marat and Dima were not in a fighting frame of mind. It was more like practice for them.
At one stage there is this ball. Marat is closer to it but he’s telling Dima to run, run. Or not. On this one short ball, Dima is going for it and Marat is like “Stop.“
To add to the paradox at one stage Marat makes this very spectacular dive volley, which was out. But then on another point the he refuses to make two steps to the play the ball.
So the match was over pretty quickly. I don’t think Marat or Dima was too bothered about it. Towards the end, this person screams out “Davai Marat.” and he waves his racket around at hip level to kind of say, yeah whatever.
What was kind of funny was that leaving the court, they guys who won were completely ignored meanwhile Marat and Dima are being mobbed for autographs.
It was already about 4 pm by the time the doubles was over so we went to check out our seats on Center Court and see the beginning of Blake vs. Clement. At about 5 15 we walked over to the player’s entrance/exit to see what was up.
We found out that Marat had been gone ages. But we hung around anyways and sure enough Helene finally got what she’d been looking for since Monday. Or one of the things anyways.
Mitya came and Helene got an autograph and a picture. ;D ;D He is really quite adorable. Even cuter in person.
Then not too long after that Nole Djokovic came out. He stopped to chat with these girls that had been waiting ages for him.He lost to Paul Henri Mathieu today but he was very cool with the girls. Totally sweet.
And that’s it really. Blake and Clement were still playing but the three of us opted for an early night. Neither Gasquet or Murray inspired us so we just came home.
Not a crazy day but a good one.
See you all tomorrow. If we come back down from our clouds that is.
;D ;D ;D
