Tennis-Russia call up newcomer Kunitsyn for Davis Cup semi (Reuters) - Russia captain Shamil Tarpishchev has called up Davis Cup newcomer Igor Kunitsyn for this month's semi-final tie against Argentina in Buenos Aires.
The 26-year-old Kunitsyn, ranked number 76 in the world, replaces Mikhail Youzhny, who has not regained top form after missing the U.S. Open with a neck injury.
Tarpishchev also included world number six Nikolay Davydenko, 20th-ranked Igor Andreev, Dmitry Tursunov (26) and Marat Safin (39) for the Sept. 19-21 tie on clay.
Tarpishchev has not named the alternate: "We'll see how everyone is doing before picking the four guys for the tie," he said.
Russia, who reached the final last year, are bidding for their third Davis Cup title after winning in 2002 and 2006. (Reporting by Gennady Fyodorov; Editing by Sonia Oxley)

i heard in the news (in argentina) that maybe davydenko and andreev are going to play the singles and tursunov-safin the doubles. marie I remember Tursunov's DC blog in 06 against Argentina ;D " My doubles partner, Marat, couldn’t care less about the pressure. One of the girls stood him up Friday night after his singles match. Her excuse was that she just got held up in a library reading up on “Sophocles’ vision of life and eternal existence of a human soul” and lost track of the time. I don’t know what Marat sees in those bookworm types but now he was definitely pissed off and there was absolutely no place left for fear or anxiety. He popped a couple more frames, stacked them inside the box labeled “Defective” and went to take a shower. Once we got out on the court we were met with a much more enthusiastic crowd than on Friday. This time the Argentine fans were drowning in the sea of Russian flags, and surprisingly, being out-screamed by a bunch that seemed to have multiplied overnight and were more than happy to scream their eyeballs out on a nice Saturday afternoon. We started the match well and, supported by the vocal crowd orchestrated by Andreev, Chernov, Youzhny, and Korolev, sprinted to a double break. "

that's weird that Marat isn't included there and Igor K is! especially that the OS is announcing DC tie for Marat and he's ahead Igor in the rankings by far!

That's really strange! What's going on? Is that the actual line-up for the DC? Ranking-wise, why is Igor included over Marat? It makes no sense!! Has Marat ruled himself out as the Thailand open is so close afterwards? wtf is going on here?

To my knowledge unless something has happened to Marat that he has been dropped or injured then he wont play - but if all 5 are fit then that team will change at the draw ceremony next thursday! Webmaster of the OS said on the forum that he will def fly to Argentina, what he'll play is up to Tarpi. This was before the nominations and he might go there as a supporter anyways... all very confusing! For some reason I can only post one picture, here is the other one: www.imageposter.com/uploads/get/519914

both SF ties should be fun, whomever ends up playing ;D as for US-Spain: Sam playing over James?? (more I think about it, James not playing isn't as shocking as the initial reaction - hopefully he can get his mojo back soon ) -- ah, well ... no matter which guys play, it's a (VERY) tall order to play Spain (*cough* Rafa), in Spain, on clay. Shoot me now. (I can dream of an unbelievable upset, 'cause let's face it ... *sigh*) Hoping for the best, though, and that the boys can make it semi-close.

hi guys i post some local news about davis semifinal. the notes are in spanish so i´ll try to translate it for you. Mancini said that he talk to marat in new york and he said he was coming and also said that he asked for the visa. " It is as usual, they said until the last minute that he will not play, but I think it is going to come because he talk to all the Argentines and told them he´ll came and told them that he was eager to". this are the links if you want to see them www.ole.clarin.com/notas/2008/09/10/tenis/01757018.htmlespndeportes.espn.go.com/news/story?id=723494&s=ten&type=story

Sabz, which pic are you referring to? I can't see any. If Marat, like OS mentioned, is definitely going no matter he is playing or not. I'd say, you always impress me, Big Yin, knowing you have to fly god-knows-how-many hours later on to Thailand. It's very very tiring. (I remember one time he was asked whether he would go to Argentina to play some tourney. He answered no, it's too long a trip. -something like that- ) Good luck on DC and hope he will stay refreshed to play Thailand open. Thanks to all who posted related info on DC semis.
