Because we hang onto that glimmer of hope, in the belief that one day he will give us another fantastic Wimbles-esqe performance..you never know what will happen..
Why is Marat always so frustrating (but in a good way) to watch??

Because of his sheer unpredictability... He has a mind like a see saw... High one minute, in the depths the next... It makes watching him fun, yet incredibly frustrating...
What makes Marat (as a person, not as a player) so appealing??

because he is so deep, passionate and he wears his heart on his sleeve!
why do the press keep tearing the chunks out of him when we all know Marat is Marat and he is always going to be this way (thank the lord lol)

Because they secretly envy Marat's guts to show his real self , including his "bad boy" persona to the world and doesn't care a dime if people will hate him for it...he's the most unpretentious person in the universe and the press are intrigued by him!
Why does it bring such happiness to support Marat even if he has been a bit unlucky these past months?

because they're boring themselves and because of their boring lives, they think that by rationalizing that everything else is boring would make them LESS boring.....  anyway...
