I just discovered this thread, interesting !
My favorite names for a girl:
- russian names I love very very very much : lioubov, kira ; russian names I like : irina, tatiana, anastasia ( more classic, I prefer the orther versions : irinoushka, nastia ...), nadia (which is arabic too !)
- tatar names : alsu , suyumbike (don't know if it is nowadays used as name but it's the name of a tatar princess in the XVIe century and there is in Kazan the "suyumbike tower")
- other european names : diane, eve or eva, aude, eden, edna, charlotte, scarlett, ilda and... tish (adams !!!)
- turkish names : aysu, yildiz
- arabic names : amber, leyla, salima, sihem, sahra, nisa
for a boy:
-russian names : lev (russian version of leon), lubim , nikita
-tatar names : timur, aslan
-other european names : maxim, victor, oscar and ....pieter (i'm a huge fan of VDH !)
- turkish names : atilla ( i heard ti's hungarian too), kubilay, timur and aslan (used in turkey too)
I don't remenber who was asking for tatar names but there are typical names like : timur, aydar, aslan, ildar, ilshat, ayrat....which are not arabic (and for a girl you have alsu, aygul,...but you have to know that "gul" comes from persian and means "rose"). As Annie said most of tatar names are arabic because of religion, it's the same thing in turkey and in most country where the population is muslim , but there are names which have a turkish etymology in turkish-language speaking countries, that's why the names timur and aslan for example are used in all those countries (from turkey to kazakhstan).
