Safin, Nalbandian Appoint New Coaches
Russian Marat Safin and Argentine David Nalbandian have both announced coaching changes. Former World No. 1 Safin has split from coach Alexander Volkov and has begun working with Argentine Hernan Gumy at this week's Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles.
Gumy reached a career-high ranking of No. 39 in 1996 and has previously worked with Latin Americans Guillermo Canas, Gustavo Kuerten and Guillermo Coria.
Safin has not won an ATP title since capturing his second Grand Slam crown at the Australian Open in January 2005. He hired Volkov in September 2006.
Nalbandian, who had been working part-time with his brother Javier, has hired fellow Argentine Martin Jaite as his coach. The pair will begin working together at the Rogers Masters in Montreal early next month. Jaite won 12 titles and reached a career-best ATP ranking of No. 10 in 1990.
Nalbandian is playing this week at the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles.

btw does anyone remember that story about marat breaking cell phones? was it gummy or sasha telling it? can anyone remember it or provide a link?? thanks It was neither. It was Fernando Meligeni in his blog telling a story that had been told him by Marcelo Melo. The link (in portuguese, sorry) is here: blogdofininho.blog.uol.com.br/arch2008-02-17_2008-02-23.htmlsummary: Marcelo had stayed at the AO 2008 to see the match between Safin and Bagdatis. After the match he went to the lockerroom to pick up his things and he heard a discussion between Marat and Hernan. Hernan was saying something like 'to be a top player you have to go for it and you cannot think. Tennis is a sport for brave guys and not for those who are afraid'. Then Marcelo heard a crash noise and Marat came out to shower. Marcelo went into the lockerroom and asked Hernan Gumy if Marat was always mad like that when he would lose, to which Hernan replied: 'did you hear that noise? it's the 3rd cell phone he breaks this year'

guyfromrussia.proboards48.com/index.cgi?board=Marat&action=display&thread=161&page=55Former player Fernando Meligeni from Brasil posted this today on his blog: Quote: "Today I played a little bit with Marcelo Melo (Wimbledon 2007 doubles semi-finalist)... ...he told me a history that he stayed until the end of the day in the Meloburne Park to watch Safin vs Baghdatis, one of those matches that all players know that will be good. When he entered the locker room after the match ended he started to hear people shouting. It was Safin and Hernan Gumy (his coach), the same who worked with Guga a little period. Hernan was trying to calm the beast, he was saying that he had to hit the ball hard to become a top player again, and not thinking too much. Like he used to do when he was the World Number 1. He said that tennis was a sport to brave players, not "cagons". Marcelo Melo and André (Sá, his doubles partner) things were in the side that the problem was coming. Marcelo told me this morning: "Fino (Meligeni's nickname) we didn't have courage to enter, we kept waiting outside". They heard a big noise inside there and saw Safin coming out to take a shower. They got inside and asked to Hernan if he was always that way, if he always got this mad after losing a match. Gumy looked at them and said: "Did you guys hear the noise? This was the third cell-phone he broke this year".

wow. what a story. third cell phone that year - it was January for crying out loud... thank you so much for sharing that - i love how they say "Hernan was trying to calm the BEAST" - hysterical. As much as I hate that he gets that angry, I guess I love to see that much passion in his game (still) this year... Also, I always see pictures of Gumy standing around just throwing balls to/at Marat, and wondered what in hell he actually does other than that - good to see he tries to teach him a little psychology.
BTW, seeing Safin come out to take a shower - lucky bastards... they should have taken pictures.

LMAO!! What a funny story! I wonder how many phones Marat has smashed by now then? It makes him even more adorable!! ;D It would be cool if there was a resident fly on the wall in the locker room to hear the Hernan/Marat conversations, some of them must be hilarious! (... and perhaps one with a little spy-camera attached too lol!)
