WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- The U.S. Open will use blue instead of green tennis courts this year in an attempt to make balls easier to see for players and TV viewers.
The area outside the court's lines will stay green, U.S. Tennis Association spokesman Chris Widmaier said Monday.
Blue courts also will be used for the 10 tournaments in the US Open Series, the summer hard-court circuit leading up to the season's final Grand Slam.
``The new court colors have been tested and proven to enhance visibility of the ball for both players and fans,'' USTA executive Arlen Kantarian said. ``In addition, it provides an instant visual link between the US Open Series tournaments and the U.S. Open, helping to create a unified 'regular season' for tennis leading up to the U.S. Open.''
The first event with the new color will be the RCA Championships at Indianapolis on July 18-24.
The U.S. Open runs Aug. 29 to Sept. 11, with broadcast network coverage on CBS.
``We support the USTA's continued efforts to further engage the TV viewer, and consider this a very positive breakthrough for the U.S. Open and the sport,'' CBS Sports president Sean McManus said.

from www.bangkokpost.com/Sports/13Jul2005_sport57.phpTENNIS THAILAND OPEN
Federer will defend his title in Bangkok The third Thailand Open will be led by Wimbledon champion Roger Federer and Australian Open winner Marat Safin, among a host of other stars.
Britain's number one Tim Henman, ranked 11th in the world, and Germany's world number 23 Tommy Haas have also confirmed their participation in Thailand's only ATP event. It will be held at Muang Thong Thani's Impact Arena from September 26-October 2.
Asia's number one Paradorn Srichaphan will be bidding to become the first Thai to win the tournament, which also features Thailand's number two Danai Udomchoke, who advanced to the second round at Wimbledon.
World number one Federer, of Switzerland, will be attempting to retain the title he won on his Thailand Open debut last year.
Russia's world number five Safin, who reached the semi-finals last year, could be the man to stop him. Hot-tempered Safin is one of only a few who have defeated Federer this year. The Russian upset the Swiss in the last four on his way to winning the Australian Open earlier this year.
In a major boost for Thai tennis and fans here, the ATP has allowed the Kingdom to organise the Thailand Open for five more years. The original five-year contract expires in 2007.
``Due to the success of the two previous Thailand Open competitions, Thailand has won another five-year contract,'' said Justice Minister Suwat Liptapanlop, who is also president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand.
``The Thailand Open has become a tournament where world class players compete.''Yahoo!! He'll be here in Bangkok again. And I will be there for sure. Can't wait for that time.

Hey! Hope ur all well. This is a small article about Marat and his knee: Marat Safin should be fit for next month's U.S. Open after undergoing keyhole surgery on his left knee, Russia's Davis Cup captain Shamil Tarpishchev said on Wednesday. Safin, troubled by pain in his left knee for the last two months, had a small operation this week in Italy to repair a ligament . "Marat has already begun a rehabilitation process and he should be ready to resume playing before the start of the U.S. Open," Tarpishchev told Reuters. The injury has forced the world number five to miss this week's Davis Cup quarter-final between Russia and France at Moscow's Olympic Stadium. The third grand slam of the year begins at Flushing Meadows in New York on August 29. This is the link: www.eurosport.com/home/pages/v4/l0/s57/e7334/sport_lng0_spo57_evt7334_sto741608.shtmlIts gr8 2 know that he will be there at the US Open - hopefully he can repeat what happened in 2000!!! Hey! I read this on the official website thought u guys wud want a read too
14.07.05 Marat Update Marat was in quite a lot of pain after the treatment on Monday but since then he feels much better. He works in the gym daily to strengthen his knee. In fact Marat felt so much better he wanted to fly to Moscow to be with the team as support for Davis Cup but the doctor would not permit it. If he continues to improve Marat should be okay to start practising tennis in 10 days time. 14.07.05 As a little extra Marat sent a small electronic Ferrari from Italy to Tom son of manager Amit Naor for his 1st birthday.
How CUTE! He sent a present even when he is in pain! Definately signs of a caring thoughtful person
Hope all u guys are well xxxx
