www.germantownnews.com/articles/2008/02/13/news/news2.txtWednesday, February 13, 2008 News Safin will bring energy to RMKC No player on the tour packs as much emotion, passion and raw energy into the game as Marat Safin, who makes his debut at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and the Cellular South Cup at the Racquet Club of Memphis, Feb. 22-March 2. In addition to his good looks and charisma, Safin is a two-time Grand Slam champion who counts among his accomplishments winning the U.S. Open in 2000 by defeating Pete Sampras and beating Lleyton Hewitt in the Australian Open in 2005. He also helped lead Russia to Davis Cup victories in 2002 and 2006. Safin was born in Moscow, USSR (now Russia), to parents who were former tennis players and coaches. Safin's father managed a local tennis club where Safin trained in his youth. At age 14, he moved to Valencia, Spain, to gain access to advanced tennis training programs which were not available in Russia. Safin gained the attention of the tennis world in 1998 with his consecutive victories over Andre Agassi and defending champion Gustavo Kuerten at the French open. Safin began his professional career in 1997 and held the No. 1 world ranking for nine weeks in November and December of 2000. He is known for his large physical size, athleticism, controversial antics and aggressive style of play. Tickets for the tournament are on sale and more information is available by calling 765-4401. Fans can see Safin, Tommy Haas, James Blake, Fernando Gonzalez, Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams in person at The Racquet Club. These world-class men and women players return to Memphis in support of tennis and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

A reporter was talking to Roger Federer at the laureus awards in St Petersburg and asked whether he would play here.
Federer said it was unlikely he would play in the St Petersburg Open for as long as it clashed with another ATP event in his home town of Basel. "If they could schedule the St Petersburg Open at another date I definitely will consider it or maybe I could play Marat Safin in an exhibition here," he said. "We've had some great battles in the past, so I think it would be fun playing him here."

Roger and Marat have always had alot of respect for each other and they certainly appreciate each other's game/talents. I sincerely hope that Marat can comes back to where he deserves to be ASAP to show us more great battles against Roger no matter who wins. It'll be great for tennis and us fans as well. As of today, after watching so many matches, I still consider 2005 AO semis THE MATCH during the past several years in which both players displayed highest level of game with two different styles. Well, I love Marat's game and have missed it so much.

Most of all I liked the way Marat handled his win and how gracious he was in winning. What I remember most was that when Roger walking out of the the court and passing Marat's chair, Marat get out of his chair to give Roger a hug. I think that act was so sweet, he was so compassionate to what Roger was feeling (as he was telling him that, he understands the hurt of losing). I wish that I could've taped the match, and could watch it.

What a great match and I never get bored. I found some internet sources where you may be able to download it (as well as 2000 US OPEN). Okay guys, this isn't an article, but a fridge magnet I picked up last week! ;D I thought of the Big Yin, but it applies to all of us. I like the sentiment. A state of mindIf you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, you don't. If you'd like to win, but think you can't, it's almost a cinch you won't. If you think you'll lose, you've lost. For out of the world you find, success begins with a fellow's will. It's all in the state of mind. I'll chuck the fridge magnet in his kit bag at Wimbles.

Very true! Sometimes Marat attitude can be that way when he doesn't have much confidence. This year is a new beginning for him I hope, as he have been playing very well.

Unforgettable match! When i remember it i always question when Marat will play at that level again. I´m anxious to see the "old" Marat "A state of mind If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, you don't. If you'd like to win, but think you can't, it's almost a cinch you won't. If you think you'll lose, you've lost. ATP Tour - Ilie in the Desert Eurosport - Fri, 29 Feb 15:34:00 2008
Former world number one Ilie Nastase looks ahead to next week's men's tournament and questions Marat Safin's sanity in his exclusive Eurosport blog from the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships.
"The men's tournament starts on Monday and I think Roger Federer has got to get on track in Dubai after his Australian Open semi-final loss to Novak Djokovic.
But he will start winning everything again, especially with all of these big tournaments coming up.
There are now three contenders for the top spot in the world, though.
Rafael Nadal is still there, don't count Nadal out because this is the time he's playing his best tennis in the spring when he's been unbeatable the last few years.
Remember that he's won three straight French Opens in a row, of course, and is headed for a fourth one.
Now there are three guys up there, with Australian Open champion Djokovic the third, but if Marat Safin were to return to his old form or another good guy like that their could be four guys up there fighting for the first spot.
I think Safin could be a real contender again because I like the way he plays, but he's crazy. He's crazier than I am I think. That's part of the reason why he is so good because he plays so crazy.
I don't think he's concentrated on his tennis, maybe he's concentrating on other things also.
I've heard he has bought lots of cars and things like that, but my suggestion would be for him to play good tennis now and buy all of the cars in the world when he's finished.
This is just my opinion, but I'm not his father and I'm not his coach.
Maybe he doesn't want to become number one in the world again, I don't know. That's possible also."

LMAO. ;D Nastase was my first ever tennis hero. I thought he was brilliant. I hate to add to the fire guys, but the Big Yin has always reminded me of him. ;D I'm surprised that Illie hasn't commented on the similarity ... then again, he is probably blind to it. LOL. I've read his autobiography (and I'm hoping he'll sign it for me in Liverpool ... he's playing in the seniors. I'll be shoving my way to the front of the queue.) and I visualised the Big Yin's following a similar pattern. If it ever materialises ... One of the most naturally talented players of his era ... and explosive. (Both of them!) LMAO. ;D But, I still expect that the Big Yin will end his career on a high note as I think he's more gifted. I believe that he can still win Grand Slams ... even Wimbles. He just needs to believe in it too. And he is more focused in the last 6 months than he has been in a long time (the one bit that Illie has got wrong in his comments). The Big Yin has been devoting himself to improving himself physically, but he also needs to keep focusing on the mental aspect. And I know he'll do it. ;D As we all do. He's working damn hard and will reap the benefits as long as he doesn't get down on himself. He's gifted with a wonderful ability and should make the most of it and stop punishing himself. He's getting there. But he needs to focus on positive thoughts completely. Double o fairy PS You can only drive one car at a time. Get rid of the extensive garage. Donate the cars to charity Big Yin ... have you bought another couple of big fancy cars? Instead of a new car, why not buy a bit of land and start planning for your retirement and developing a garden/vegetable plot? I can see you out there on the land ... or playing with dead fish. ;D Lying on a beach doing nothing ain't you .. deep down.

www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=6618801&postcount=148Former player Fernando Meligeni from Brasil posted this today on his blog: Quote: "Today I played a little bit with Marcelo Melo (Wimbledon 2007 doubles semi-finalist)... ...he told me a history that he stayed until the end of the day in the Meloburne Park to watch Safin vs Baghdatis, one of those matches that all players know that will be good. When he entered the locker room after the match ended he started to hear people shouting. It was Safin and Hernan Gumy (his coach), the same who worked with Guga a little period. Hernan was trying to calm the beast, he was saying that he had to hit the ball hard to become a top player again, and not thinking too much. Like he used to do when he was the World Number 1. He said that tennis was a sport to brave players, not "cagons". Marcelo Melo and André (Sá, his doubles partner) things were in the side that the problem was coming. Marcelo told me this morning: "Fino (Meligeni's nickname) we didn't have courage to enter, we kept waiting outside". They heard a big noise inside there and saw Safin coming out to take a shower. They got inside and asked to Hernan if he was always that way, if he always got this mad after losing a match. Gumy looked at them and said: "Did you guys hear the noise? This was the third cell-phone he broke this year".
