Marat Safin in action at the Dubai Duty Free Men's Open. Gulf News
Safin feels he has yet to reach peak form By Alaric Gomes, Staff Reporter
Dubai: Marat Safin knows he has a long way to go before he hits peak form on the ATP Men's Tour.
Safin advanced to the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Men's Open before losing in straight sets to Olivier Rochus of Belgium on Wednesday.
"It's a question of having enough matches under my belt before I can start playing well again," Safin said after his loss to the Belgian on Wednesday.
"I need to get my rhythm back and it doesn't come straight back after making a comeback following such a long lay-off," the temperamental Russian said.
Safin was using Dubai as his comeback on the ATP Tour following a long lay-off of six months following an injury on his left knee. He did well, and he sounded pleased too, after advancing to the second round here following a first round shock win over third seed Nikolay Davydenko on Monday.
He was hoping to use the doubles too as part of his preparations for more gruelling times ahead, but his partner Younes El Aynaoui suddenly pulled out and went straight back home despite winning his first round singles match.
"I would have liked to play the doubles as there are certain aspects of the game which come more easily, like the serve and volley," Safin said.
"I know my comeback is a long way off, and I still have a long way to go before I touch peak form," the Russian admitted.
And as he embarks on the next leg of the circuit with Indian Wells and Miami on his mind, Safin is hoping the draws at these big tournaments will favour him to help achieve his objective. "I need luck in the draws, especially at these big tournaments," he said.
"I do not want to be meeting players such as Federer, Nadal or Roddick in the first rounds itself."

The PLAINS OF SPAIN: When questioned at his post-match press conference on why he trains in Spain, Russian Marat Safin answered matter-of-factly.
"Otherwise, where do you go? There are not many places where you can go and practice and have a good time,"
Safin said. "No places in the world where you may have another option."
When broached about the training facility in Bradenton, Fla., Safin responded, "If you come to Miami, everybody's busy. Nobody wants to practice. There's basically no atmosphere, (no one praises you) at all."
Safin later said, "In (Bradenton) you can practice and forget about it. They just play golf all the rest of the day. What else can you do? ... Go to Outback Steakhouse, and that's it, few margaritas and McDonald's."
The Russian capped the press conference with praise for Scottish teenage phenom Andy Murray, who trains in Barcelona. The 18-year-old Murray advanced to the round of 64 on Friday with a victory over Vasilis Mazarakis.
"It's going to be great for him and for his tennis,"
Safin said. "He will like it because the people, the Spanish people would be friendly. They will take care of you - if they can see that you are a nice person - you are honest."
As for me .
"I'm just hoping to play as many tournaments I can to get my ranking back," former world number one Safin said.
"I was coming here and just trying to play as many matches as I can."
"I don't expect anything great here at all. My injury will never go away. It's already become so chronic there's no chance to fix it so I can play without pain."
Safin passed on surgery and chose instead to nurse his knee back to health through physical therapy in Moscow. He said surgeons warned him that if he underwent an operation he risked ending his tennis career.
"They told me, 'Don't do the operation. Do the procedure, physical therapy, ultrasound, laser, all these things. At least you can play a little bit, but if you have the operation and something goes wrong then, you just forget about tennis,'" he said.
Safin will face 28th seed Carlos Moya of Spain.
