This is not really an article, but thought I would post it here to help pass the time, and at least it lets us know where Marat was on the 01st Feb ;D \ Yeltsin Says Goodbye The Kremlin’s Georgievsky Hall hosted past Wednesday the black-tie reception dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Russia’s first president Boris Yeltsin. The party looked as if it were the sincere farewell to the Yeltsin’s epoch. Backed up by his wife Naina Yeltsin and his aide Shevchenko, Boris Yeltsin was welcoming his 300 guests in the Malachite Reception-Room of the Kremlin for the second hour running. The endless string was moving along the carpet leaving luxurious and numerous presents in the first floor near the cloakroom. No one was late for the Event, all biting frost and the road jams notwithstanding. From the Malachite Hall, the course was the Alexandrovsky hall, where champagne and juice were served, and further to Adreevsky Hall to listen to the concert. The very list of invitees deserves attention. Apart from Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, who had actually insisted on the Kremlin celebration, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev, the Event lured former president of the United States Bill Clinton, former chancellor of Germany Helmut Kohl, former president of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma, former president of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akaev. The celebration was not ignored by the business elite of Russia with Vagit Alekperov, Roman Abramovich, Oleg Deripaska easily spotted among the guests. The sport community was represented by Shamil Tarpishchev, Evgeny Kafelnikov, [glow=red,2,300]Marat Safin[/glow]. Russia’s famous stage director Galina Volchek, violoncellist Mstislav Rostropovich, literature expert Marietta Chudakova, actor Oleg Basilashvili stood for the art, not to mention the stars involved in the concert. The dinner was held in Georgievsky Hall, for which the usual thing is presenting credentials rather than marking the birthdays. “Thank you… thank you that there are people in this hall, who love me or hate me at least,” Yeltsin said in the final speech that February 1, 2006, which could be regarded as the actual end of his epoch.

Hello something a little different [glow=red,2,300]New hair-do looks cool as Safin romps By Cherian Thomas [/glow]1 March 2006 DUBAI — One woman spectator yesterday at the Dubai Duty Free ATP men’s championship said: “That’s the way I tie my hair before a shower.” The young lady was pointing at Marat Safin’s hairstyle as the oft-injured Russian heart throb brushed aside his compatriot — on Safin’s comeback to competitive tennis after a long lay-off — in the Dubai Open. Safin’s long hair was tied into a small bun on top at the back of his head. It reminded one of Cossack warriors. But then those ancient Russian warriors had shaved heads with a pony tail. Well, even if he didn’t have a shaved head, Safin behaved like a warrior on the show court of the Aviation Club. “When I saw the (men’s singles) draw, I didn’t think I’d make a set, leave alone win.” Safin caused the biggest upset of the tournament so far in the 14th edition of the $1 million tournament when the 53rd ranked outplayed and outsmarted Nikolay Davydenko, the world No. 5 and third seed here. “He’s in great shape and has been playing well all last year,” Safin said of his opponent. “So winning against him feels good.” Davydenko was not too upset about the defeat. You win some, you lose some. “Safin has always been a great player. On his day he can beat anyone. I found the court a bit fast though. The balls were bouncing off fast,” said Davydenko. Safin missed most of the 2003 season with a wrist injury and was sidelined for the most of the second half of last year with a knee injury. So, how’s the knee holding up? “The knee feels ok. But I’m a bit scared (to push it),” said the Russian, ranked No.1 in 2000 who added that the knee, for him, was now more of a mental thing than physical. So how did he spend the six months? “The first two months were great. I did all the things a young man can do with his friends. Then I started missing the game, after all it’s my life. So, while everyone else was playing I was walking the treadmill.” Reasons for the many injuries? “The year (season) is too long. The different surfaces (is another reason). But I’m hoping to play for another five years,” he added. Sports Times
