U.S. Open first round: Vince Spadea vs. Marat Safin 8/26/08 5:09 AM | Jonathan Morgan For the second day of US Open action, fans will be treated to a match featuring a pair of characters in Marat Safin and "Vinnay Ice" Spadea. The tennis should be pretty good too.
These two have played once before, back in Miami 2004 in the second round. Spadea won a hard-fought and very entertaining match, and this one should be similar.
Neither man is in his prime as both are experienced veterans. Safin this year has begun to try to put himself back together. He had a great run at Wimbledon, reaching the semis, but hasn't done much since. Safin had to retire in Washington against Fabio Fognini after losing the first set, and while he appears to be over that injury, word on the practice court is that Marat's temper is flaring wild. He has allegedly broken many rackets and is disgusted with his play.
However, that doesn't mean the tortured Russian genius can't pull it all together. Spadea has had a very mediocre year, hovering around the 100 ranking, winning matches here and there and even playing some Challengers. He is not in the best of form, playing a bit erratic this summer, and not doing as well as he would like.
This should be very entertaining and Marat should take it, but you really never know with Safin.
Mikhail Youzhny has withdrawan from the tournament as he has been suffering from a fever the last couple of days and will be replaced by Cipolla. Bad luck Teddy
