Chile draw level in La Serena Fernando Gonzalez defeated Marat Safin 63 75 64 to bring Chile level with Russia in their Davis Cup by BNP Paribas first round tie in La Serena. Gonzalez surprised Safin with long rallies and a strong position on the baseline, increasing his confidence as the first set advanced. Although Safin managed to break at 2-2, Gonzalez returned the favour immediately, secured his serve and broke once again, winning the first set to the delight of the 9,000-capacity crowd. Both players put in a strong performance in the second set. Gonzalez continued with his long rally strategy, while Safin favoured a serve and volley game. Numbers do not lie: although Gonzalez had 22 forehand winners to only one from Safin, the Russian had 24 net point winners to only four of his opponents. One final break from Gonzalez and the count was two sets ahead for the world’s No. 5. The third set showed some imprecision from both, but two breaks for Gonzalez and only one from Safin secured the third singles rubber for Chile, who now draw 2-2 with Russia. A peculiar moment happened in the middle of the third set: Safin found a small butterfly lying next to the net, approached very carefully and took it out of the court, delivering it to Roberto Solari, vice-president of the Chilean Tennis Federation, to applause from the crowd. What a change “Until the last point is played, nothing is lost” Gonzalez said. [glow=red,2,300]“I think we will win this tie. I don’t think Andreev will be able to repeat what he did on Friday, and Nicolas (Massu) should be able to beat him”.[/glow]what cockyness - shame it's gonna back fire - BTW how many MP does Igor need “I think the Russians had the weight of playing under pressure, and I took advantage of that. Safin’s serve was less upsetting for me than Andreev’s, but the court made the ball bounce very oddly and I had to invent things in the moment”. Safin, on the other hand, was not too expressive: “The game was closer than the score says, perhaps I could have won it as well. Fernando had his chances and took them, I did not. He had a bit of luck too. It’s only a tennis match after all, somebody has to win”. The audience left on Friday with a sour heart, as both Gonzalez and Massu had lost their first ever homr Davis Cup matches and the 0-2 count looked very hard to recover. Now the whole crowd is expecting the full comeback, something Chile has never done before in a Davis Cup tie.

Oooh the pics are wonderful! I like shaved Marat.
Anyhoo, nothing to add to what has already been said. Perhaps instead of an encouragement book, we should all chip in and buy some tourqoise CK undies... What size do you think he needs?
