Legg Mason Tennis Classic Preview By Peter Dopkin, Online Editor, TENNIS.com The top men in American tennis venture to Washington, D.C. next week for the Legg Mason Tennis Classic. Andre Agassi will make his second appearance of the year in North America in search of his sixth Legg Mason title, but it’s going to be hot and the humidity is going to be oppressive. If Andre has any energy left after battling the heat in L.A., he could surprise some people and be a factor. Andy Roddick has two new weapons and they both appear to be serving him well. He seems to have found his missing backhand in Santa Barbra—who would have thought Jimmy Connors had it? Roddick’s new Connors-esque down the line backhand has added a missing dynamic to his stalled game. Roddick, the 2001 champ, is looking to defend his title in D.C., which is the last place he hoisted a winner’s trophy. But everyone in the draw will be chasing one man, James Blake. A surprise finalist last year at Legg Mason, Blake is now the man to beat. He won his third title of the year in Indianapolis to open the U.S. Open Series, beating Roddick in the final. He is ranked No. 5 in the world and, since he has had a week off, should be well rested. With all his ducks in a row, he is certainly the odds-on favorite to win his second title in D.C. Lleyton Hewitt, the 2004 champ, is coming off a horrible first-round loss in L.A. to Paul Goldstein and should be eager to get back out on the court. He, too, should be rested and ready to contend for the title. Tim Henman, the champion in 2003, had a good run on grass at Queen’s Club, before losing Hewitt in the semifinals. However, he was crushed by Roger Federer in the second round at Wimbledon. Henman likes D.C. and could pull off a few nice wins. Anything more than that would be gravy. Nicolas Kiefer has been battling injuries of late and anything could happen for him in the 48-man draw. The German No. 1 could wilt in the heat, or he could make a run into the late rounds. Frenchmen Sebastian Grosjean and “the Magician” Fabrice Santoro could be surprise semifinalists if their opponents aren’t careful. Grosjean’s game is sporadic, but when he is on, he is very dangerous. Santoro is the craftiest of veterans and his unique style always makes him threat. Coupled with the heat, he could give people fits. After months of speculation Andy Murray finally has Brad Gilbert in his corner. Murray has beaten Roddick twice this year and could prove to be a thorn in the side a top seed. With the heat and humidity Murray’s nemesis, conditioning could be his downfall. Week after week the tennis world waits for Marat Safin to wake up and return to form. Safin is one of the biggest enigmas on tour and how he’ll play from game to game is a total mystery. One man that no one will want to see in their draw is Ivo Karlovic. The 6-foot-10 Croatian is almost impossible to break. The good news is he hardly ever breaks his opponents. Last year he gave Roddick all he could handle in D.C. and it took Agassi three tiebreakers at the U.S. Open last year to beat him. Because he’s able to get any given set into a tiebreaker, Karlovic’s chances to pull of a big win are greatest in tournaments, like the Legg Mason, where they play best-of-three-set matches.. www.tennis.com/news/news.aspx?id=36730

Thanks kuniochi...trust my luck two Russians meet in the first round...and even though Igor has really progressed in the past few months and it's psychologically more difficult to pla a compatriot...I hope Marat sees some good opportunities in the draw, which for once isn't as scary as always, and uses these to get back in the game!!!!!!!!!!!! UDACHI MARATIK!!!!!!!!!!!
