Champions Tour format The Champions Tour tournaments run over a minimum of 4 days. The players are split into two groups of four. During the first three days of competition, each player faces off the other three players in his group in a round robin format. The top player from each group contest in the final, while the two players who finish second in each group play off for third and fourth places respectively.
Matches are contested over the best of three sets, with the deciding set taking the form of a Champions tie-break. The Champions tie-break is an expanded version of the conventional professional tennis tie-break, whereby the winner is the first player to reach 10 points by a margin of 2.
To be eligible to compete on the ATP Champions Tour, players must have been either a World No. 1 during their competitive playing careers, a Grand Slam singles finalist, or a singles player in a victorious Davis Cup team; and they should have retired from the ATP circuit. Each event can also invite two players of its choice to take wild cards.

The players field for the German stage of the BlackRock Tour of Champions is complete. The former German Tennis-Pro Boris Becker now added to the field of the first BlackRock Tennis Classic at Hamburg. “I am happy to come back to Hamburg Rothenbaum that I keep in fond memories. It's always been special to play in Hamburg where I reached the semifinals several times, and once even played the final. I even got involved with the tournament as Chairman”, says Becker who won Wimbledon three times during his career, when asked about his Tennis Classic participation. “It will be a great experience to compete with former colleagues like Michael Stich, Thomas Muster or Goran Ivanisevic in Hamburg again”.
Becker became a Tennis-Pro in 1984 and won 49 tournaments on the ATP circuit until retiring in 1999.
Keen on fighting Boris Becker is the former Wimbledon-Winner Goran Ivanisevic. “I am looking forward to Hamburg. I played at Rothenbaum so often. I like remembering the final versus Andrei Medvedev in 1995. The match against Boris in May will be something very special to me, because I really would like to beat him once more. It will be our twentieth match and at the moment the score is 10:9 for Boris” affirms the Croatioan Tennis-Idol his ambition for the BlackRock Tennis Classic Hamburg 2007.
“Together they won 11 Grand Slam titles! It will be a fantastic tournament” says Carl-Uwe Steeb, tournament director of the first ATP Champions Event in Hamburg.

Hamburg - World No. 1 and three-times defending champion Roger Federer returns to the Tennis Center Rothenbaum to play the Masters Series Hamburg presented by E.ON Hanse. Talking to tournament director Walter Knapper on-site Crandon Park Tennis Center on Key Biscayne (Miami) Federer renewed his promise to serve in May 2007.
“Why do you ask? Of course I am playing!” stated Federer surprised when getting the information about Knappers retirement after this years tournament. “I want to be present at your farewell”. “I have been knowing Roger a long time and I hold him in high regard as a fantastic athlete and open-hearted man. Although I assumed that he keeps his promise to play at Rothenbaum this year I was happy to hear his confirmation”. Walter Knapper congratulated Federer on winning the Masters Series Hamburg title three times since 2002 (2002, 2004, 2005). On May 20, 2007, Knapper will attend the award ceremony for the last time to hand out prices to the champions. As from 2008 the former German tennis-pro Carl-Uwe Steeb will be in charge for the players and tournament at Rothenbaum.
In addition to Federer Worlds No. 8 and 2006 Masters Cup finalist James Blake wants to descend on the Rothenbaum Tennis Center in May. His constant compagnon, elder brother Thomas Blake Jr., recently told on Walter Knapper: “James enjoyed Hamburg a lot. This year he wants to do better in chasing the title.” In 2006 the US American Top-player lost to Mario Ancic (CRO) in the round of sixteen.
Moreover, Novak Djokovic (SER) promised to play at Hamburg Rothenbaum after winning the Miami Masters Series title on Key Biscane a week ago. The shootingstar who also played the final in Indian Wells declared: “Of course I am coming to Hamburg. I am looking forward to play and meet Walter Knapper again. I got to know him at the Black Forest Open in Freudenstadt".
With Federer, Djokovic and Blake already five ATP Tour stars affirmed their attendance in the men's single field at the Masters Series Hamburg, to be held May 12-20, 2007, at the Rothenbaum Tennis Center. The Croatian No. 1 Ivan Ljubicic and titleholder Tommy Robredo told Walter Knapper about their plans for Hamburg in Indian Wells already.
Especially defending champion Tommy Robredo is keen on playing Hamburgs tournament. "I am very proud to win this title. And I look forward to defending it next year" Robredo declared after winning last years single final in 2006.
After winning the German Championships in Seeburg near Berlin in December 2006 the young German Tennis Master Tobias Summerer got the first Wild Card for the Masters Series Hamburg 2007.
