from www.atptennis.comPreview: It's Do-or-Die for Cup Contenders in Paris as Federer Chases More HistoryAll 16 seeded players received byes into the second round of the tournament. The BNP Paribas Masters is the final tournament of the regular 2006 ATP circuit, with eight players going on to the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai. There are still three spots remaining for the season-ending championship. It also is the last of nine ATP Masters Series tournaments in 2006. World No. 1 Roger Federer leads the way with a record four AMS titles for the second straight year. Federer is making his first appearance in Bercy since 2003 when he lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Tim Henman. This is the only ATP Masters Series tournament Federer has never advanced past the quarterfinals in four appearances (4-4 mark). Federer could meet St. Petersburg runner-up Thomas Johansson in the second round and the first seed he could face is No. 14 Jarkko Nieminen in the third round. Other seeds Federer could encounter in the quarterfinals are No. 6 Tommy Robredo, battling for a spot in the Tennis Masters Cup, or No. 12 Novak Djokovic, the youngest player in the Top 20. Federer is attempting to become the first player in ATP Masters Series history (since 1990) to reach all nine Masters Series finals. Tennis Masters Cup Countdown[glow=red,2,300]The No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal withdrew on Sunday due to a pulled stomach muscle[/glow]. His spot in the draw was taken by [glow=red,2,300]Robin Soderling [/glow]of Sweden. He would have been the next player seeded. Soderling will take on the winner of Marat Safin-wild card Nicolas Mahut in the opening round. Safin is a three-time winner in Paris, capturing the title in the even years (2000, ’02, ’04). No. 16 Richard Gasquet, the top Frenchman who is coming off his third ATP title of the year in Lyon, could face Soderling in the third round. In the quarterfinals, seeds possibly awaiting are No. 7 James Blake or No. 10 Tommy Haas. Blake is No. 7 in the Race standings while Haas is No. 12 and must win the title in order to have a chance in qualifying for Shanghai. The No. 3 seed David Nalbandian, who is the defending Tennis Masters Cup champion, withdrew Saturday due to gastroenteritis. Nalbandian is hoping to hold off several challengers and qualify. He is No. 6 in the Race standings and his spot in the draw went to Dominik Hrbaty, who became the No. 17 seed. The other seeds in the third quarter of the draw are No. 8 and defending champion Tomas Berdych, No. 11 David Ferrer and No. 13 Andy Murray. Berdych and Ferrer could meet in the third round. Hrbaty would meet the winner of Igor Andreev-Gael Monfils in the second round. Andreev is playing in his first tournament since Barcelona in April. He underwent left knee surgery Apr. 28. The No. 4 seed is Nikolay Davydenko, a four-time ATP winner this season who on Sunday was announced as a Tennis Masters Cup qualifier for the second straight year.. (;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS ) The 25-year-old Russian is No. 5 in the Race and last year he reached the semifinals in Shanghai. He will open against a qualifier or Jose Acasuso and could meet countryman Dmitry Tursunov, the No. 15 seed, in the third round. Other seeds in Davydenko’s quarterfinal are No. 5 Fernando Gonzalez, who is coming off his third straight indoor final in Basel, and Mario Ancic, who is coming off a title effort in St. Petersburg. Going into the tournament, Ancic trails No. 8 Robredo by 23 points in the Race and No. 9 Gonzalez by 15 points. Gonzalez and Ancic are No. 9 and 10, respectively in the standings. They could play each other in the third round. Their career head-to-head is tied 2-2. Nadal Statement on his withdrawal"I woke up on Thursday morning feeling pain in my abdominals but I still decided to practice. Everything was ok until I started serving and felt pain at that stage. I practiced again on Friday but the pain got worse and I had to stop in the middle of the session. I decided to take an MRI on Saturday morning and they told me it showed a rupture of the fibre. I travelled to Paris to take another MRI and that showed that there was a rupture of 4.3mm" "I was practicing hard to get ready for the BNP Paribas Masters which is one of the most important events in the world. This was an important week for me in order to win matches and ranking points and Paris obviously has a special place in my heart having won Roland Garros the last two years. But they told me that I must rest one week so I cannot play here. I plan to be back at the Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai (Nov 12-19)." "I knew this tournament was celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and since I am 20 too, I was really looking forward to taking part especially since I missed it the last two years. I am really sorry for my fans in Paris and I promise I will be back for both Roland Garros and Bercy in 2007 but this year's BNP Paribas Masters will still be a very strong event with a lot of good players and great matches."

Tired Federer pulls out of Paris Federer has played 92 matches so far in 2006 World number one Roger Federer dealt another blow to the line-up for the Paris Masters by pulling out, saying he was too tired to play. Federer has not played in Paris since 2003, and the news comes after Rafael Nadal also withdrew with a rib injury. Federer has been busy recently, winning in Tokyo, Madrid and beating Fernando Gonzalez in Sunday's Basle final. "This is my 92nd match of the season, I have to be careful," said Federer after beating Gonzalez on Sunday. Tournament co-director Alain Riou said: "He's scared of pushing too hard, so he'd rather not take the risk." And fellow tournament co-director, and former player, Cedric Pioline, called for players to be suspended for mssing tournaments. "There's a problem with the structure of the calendar between Masters Series events and other tournaments," he said. "The only penalty of any use would be suspension. It's the only thing the players understand because financial penalties won't make any difference." Taking his place will be nonother than Russian no 8 Teimuraz Gabashvillii
