From eurosport:
Safin next for Roddick
Sixth seed Andy Roddick set up a mouthwatering third-round clash with former champion Marat Safin when he cruised past Frenchman Marc Gicquel 6-3 7-6 6-4 at the Australian Open on Wednesday.
The big-serving American had too much power from the back of the court for the world number 54 and came through on Rod Laver Arena after an hour and 56 minutes.
An early break took Roddick to the opening set and he held his nerve to win the second set tiebreak 7-4. Gicquel, who out-aced his rival 10-7, battled in the third but was broken in game 10 to hand the former U.S. Open champion victory.
The 24-year-old said his game was gradually improving after coming through his first-round match against Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four long sets on Monday.
"I thought I hit the ball a little better, hit the ball a little more solid," Roddick told reporters.
"Today I was putting myself in better positions on the court, but I still could have executed a little better," said Roddick, who hit 22 unforced errors to his opponent's 19.
Roddick must now quickly turn his attention to an enticing third-round match-up with Safin, the 2005 champion who only progressed on Wednesday courtesy of a second five-setter this week.
The two last met when Safin beat Roddick to help Russia into last year's Davis Cup final, and the American said he had been prepared to face the 2005 champion.
"When I saw the draw I expected to play Marat. I think we're both better than a third-round match-up but that's the way it shakes out."
Their career meetings stand at 3-3, but Safin enjoyed a five-set victory against Roddick in the 2004 semi-final at Melbourne Park before falling to Roger Federer at the final hurdle.
"We've always had close matches. We're kind of similar, we both like to hit a big ball, we both serve pretty big, move well for being considered big guys.
"I think it's an interesting match-up for us and maybe for the fans as well."

i am currently studying for my exams, and because of that i didnt have time to write i i have to contain myself because i really want to watch AO all night long! as i woke up i expected to see that marat won in straight sets, but i was shocked and only thought: how did he manage to play a five set match against this guy!? although sela played very well, and congrats to him! i knew him before, when we (serbia) played davis cup against israel i think sela lost all his matches against all of our players if i am not wrong! i am really looking forward to the roddick match and i think if marat has a right mindset he will have a good chance to win! his is the type of player that maybe underestimated sela a bit but against roddick on such a stage i think he will be motivated enough to give his best, as he usually thrives in those situations! luckily he is playing quite well, at some moments at least and i think his forehand is solid! i will never forget last year in washington when he couldnt hit a forhand with the strings but more often with the rim! thanks to u all for nice pics and interviews and all the best for 07 although its a little late, but better late than never

Im losing the track often cos of all the little bits Marat, calmed down, thinking reasonablly.. That was a very funny moment,I can see him grumbling about something, then pulling out the balls from a pocket down on the court, and I hear commentator saying:OMG,unbelievable,he doesn't wanna play-and I was like WTF?? I though he was acting like a spoilt kid cos he thought he's gonna lose. Then the commentator amanded himself:Of course,it's not that Safin decided not to play further,but..." If only he could skip all these boring first rounds ... It seems like he doesn't feel like running during this kind of matches .. We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming, to report breaking news. In the TGFR province of Mulan Land, levels of drooling have reached record breaking heights. It is believed that Marat Safin is the main casue. He is accused of being incredibly hot, talented as well as charistmatic. Further accusations include not taking off enough clothes during Aussie summer heat.Safin's lastest misdemeanor was reported during his second round match. This reporter is at a loss for words. Authorities, including Safin/Shevchenko expert Admin Annie, are also interested in questioning the Infernal Not Twin known as Yse. She is believed to be one of Safin's accomplices and responsible for the viewing of these incredibly hot pic by the devious minded memebers of TGFR. Ouu,Marat shirtless, these sweatbands on both his arms...Devious thoughts on fire .. And LMAO Bia

Federer, Roddick, Williams cruise into third round; Safin struggles MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -The early jitters are over.
Roger Federer, Andy Roddick and Serena Williams all posted straight-set victories Wednesday to advance to the third round of the Australian Open, serving notice that they're rounding into form after some opening-match nerves and glitches.
Roddick and Williams set up showdowns with tough opponents. Sixth-seeded Roddick beat Frenchman Marc Gicquel 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-4 and next faces 2005 Australian Open champion Marat Safin, who is seeded 26th while rebounding from a knee injury that kept him from defending his title last year.
Safin was shaky in going the distance for the second consecutive match, benefiting from a rain delay and rallying from a set down to oust Dudi Sela of Israel 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-0 in a match with 20 service breaks.
Play was halted with Safin serving at 5-6, 30-30 in the fourth set. After the roof was closed, Safin came out sharp, serving an ace on the first point and running through the tiebreaker against Sela, who lived down to his No. 202 ranking the rest of the way.
``When I saw the draw, I think I expected to play Marat,'' said Roddick, who got plenty of practice on his groundstrokes against Gicquel.
``I think we're both maybe better than a third-round matchup against each other. But that's the way it shakes out.''
Williams, a two-time champion here but unseeded after dealing with a knee injury of her own, will play No. 5 Nadia Petrova.
``It's definitely a step up,'' she said. ``I feel excited to go into the match. I feel ready.''
After Tuesday's broiling conditions, players were happy to see a cloudy day where temperatures were cool by comparison.
Top-ranked Federer generated his own heat, ripping six forehand winners in the first three games while dominating Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.
``I think I was pretty much in control of the match today,'' said Federer, seeking his 10th Grand Slam title and third in a row. ``It was a good match from my side. I think it's a bit of an improvement.''
He had a stretch of three service games spanning the second and third sets when he did not allow a point. But always a perfectionist, Federer berated himself after errors and took practice swings to make sure he didn't repeat the mistakes.
Federer will meet U.S. Open semifinalist Mikhail Youzhny in the third round after the 25th-seeded Russian beat Lu Yen-hsen of Taiwan 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. Next could be No. 14-seeded Novak Djokovic, who beat Feliciano Lopez in straight sets.
Roddick is always a little twitchy, constantly tugging at the shoulders of his shirt, adjusting his baseball cap and bouncing the ball 13 times or more before serving. But once the points began Wednesday, he was all business.
He and Gicquel engaged in long rallies, moving each other from sideline to sideline. The Frenchman won one 34-shot rally, pumping his fist toward the sky, but it wasn't enough.
Roddick had just a little too much power, particularly on his serve. After fending off three break points in the first set, he never faced another. He steadily cranked up his serve, shouting ``Yes!'' after smacking an ace to finish off the second-set tiebreaker. He had three more in the next game and finished with 18.
``I'm always a little edgy in the first rounds,'' Roddick said. ``Today, it felt like there was some good stuff. I was putting myself in better positions on the court. I still could have executed a little bit better. Feel like I'm pretty close to playing clean tennis.''
Williams, who won the last of her seven Grand Slam titles here in 2005, rallied from 1-4 in the tiebreaker in her 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Luxembourg's Anne Kremer.
``I think I got a little bit off to a slow start in the first set, and then I was making a tremendous amount of errors. I just couldn't get the balls in for some reason,'' Williams said. ``And the second set I was making more shots and I was playing just more what I had planned, more of the game that I had practiced.
``I definitely feel like I'm getting better with each match.''
Thailand's Danai Udomchoke upset No. 24 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-6 (0), 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 and a former Australian Open champion tumbled, with 2002 winner Thomas Johansson losing to No. 16 David Ferrer in four sets.
Australia wild-card entry Wayne Arthurs, 35 years old and possibly in his last Grand Slam, advanced to the third round with a 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 over American qualifier Zach Fleishman, who had his hair dyed in red, white and blue stripes for the match.
Other men's winners included No. 9 Mario Ancic, No. 18 Richard Gasquet, No. 20 Radek Stepanek and No. 22 Dominik Hrbaty.
Advancing on the women's side were former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, the No. 3 seed, along with Petrova, No. 7 Elena Dementieva, No. 8 Patty Schnyder, No. 9 Dinara Safina, No. 11 Jelena Jankovic, No. 15 Daniela Hantuchova, No. 16 Shahar Peer, No. 17 Anna-Lena Groenefeld, No. 19 Li Na of China, No. 20 Tatiana Golovin, No. 21 Katarina Srebotnik, No. 22 Vera Zvonareva and No. 26 Maria Kirilenko.
No. 18 Ai Sugiyama lost to Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus.
