Brought an AO Official Magazine! There are couple of pages that Marat has been mentioned, I do not have electronic links, here are the direct quote (Typings) are AO Magazine...
Australian Open The Grand Slam of Asia/Pacificcc Official Program
1) Page 189. Marat safin reckons he has already played his best match. That came in 2000 when he destropyed pete Sampras in the US Open final. He may be right, but there have been other highlights, including his semi-final defeat of Roger Federer at Australian Open 2005. Safin has not returned to Melbourne since shattering Llyeton Hewitt's title dreams in the final, and therein lies the story of the enigmatic Russian's career. He is arguably ALONE among current players in mactching Federer for talent, but he lacks the qorld number;s steely focus and luck with injuries. The 26-year-old returned to action last Feberuary after six monthes out with knee injury, and as he struggled with his form, he saw his ranking plunge to 104. He has set his sights on returning to the top 10 in 2007." There is no other season for me to play," he said " Money I have, Its only about what I can achieve."
2)AO record 2006--Did not play 2005 Winner D Hewitt 2004 Final Lt Federer 2003-R3 Lt Schuettler 2002 F. Lt. T Johansson 2001 R4 Lt Hrbaty 2000 R1 Lt Staffor 1999 R3 Lt Kucera Ao record: 26 wins, 6 losses

Marat has arrived in Melbourne ;D (source SMH.com.au ) Safin hits Melbourne for Aussie Open Russia's Marat Safin, the last man to beat Roger Federer at the Australian Open, has returned to the Rod Laver Arena court for the first time since claiming the 2005 title. Safin, who has not won a tournament since claiming the 2005 Open, flew into Melbourne on Thursday to prepare for this year's event, which starts on January 15. He missed the chance to defend his crown last year because of a knee injury. In 2005, he defeated Federer in an epic five-set semi-final which lasted more than four hours and in which he had to save a match point. He went on to beat Australia's top player Lleyton Hewitt in the final. The semi-final was the only loss Federer has had in his past 20 matches in the tournament, coming in between his 2004 and 2006 victories. The two men crossed paths at Rod Laver Arena on Thursday. Federer, who arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday, was hitting with his Australian coach Tony Roche immediately before Safin took the court. Safin then spent about 90 minutes practising his powerful groundstrokes with his coach, countryman Alexander Volkov, with Federer watching courtside for the first few minutes. Safin, a former world No.1, has dropped to No.26 in the rankings after failing to win a tournament last year, only the second year in the past eight in which he has not claimed a title. He will continue his Australian Open preparation at next week's Kooyong Classic round-robin event, which also features Federer.

More from The Herald Sun ;D (Thanks SUN! ) 05jan07 With some excerpts from Rogelio and Marat's conversation Roger Federer, Marat Safin warm upSam Edmund THE biggest names in world tennis continue to roll into Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open.Russian powerhouse Marat Safin touched down about 7.30am yesterday. The charismatic big man ignored the afternoon heat for an extended hit-up with his two-man entourage on Rod Laver Arena. But he was made to wait by Swiss rival Roger Federer and Australian coach Tony Roach -- the world No. 1 opting for a second training session in as many days. The pair shook hands and exchanged a few laughs, chatting about recent additions to their global property portfolios and sharing tales of their off-season.Safin, who became a hero to thousands of male fans at the Open a couple of years ago with his "Safinettes" cheer squad, went topless to catch some rays. He began with some gentle groundstrokes before turning to Federer. "Hey, where are you staying?" he asked. Federer replied: "Here? I'm staying at Crown. You?" Safin: "The Hyatt."Federer: "The one with the food court?" Safin: "Yeah, classy."Federer: "You love that food court." The pair, watched by Federer's girlfriend and manager Miroslava Vavrinec, were in good spirits. Safin opted to blow out the cobwebs with a 90-minute session. Amelie Mauresmo also arrived yesterday as she enters the final phase of her preparation. The Frenchwoman will be aiming to defend her 2006 Australian Open title, the first Grand Slam of her career. Big-hitting American Andy Roddick will arrive today or tomorrow before competing in the Kooyong AAMI Classic from January 10-13. The Australian Open starts on January 15. www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,21012953-2862,00.html

Thanks so much for the info and pictures! I've had feelings of anticipation ever since Hopman Cup and other tournaments began, but now that Marat has landed in Australia, I am officially excited for the Australian Open to roll around. 10 more days to go...and Kooyong is even sooner!
