I'm so happy he did it!!! I only saw the first two sets and three games of the third one. He almost killed me, especially in that second set when he was leading 5-2 and then he lost the next 3 games. I felt like smashing the tv. But then I had to leave and it was so hard to pull myself away from the tv set... I found out the final score on the radio and I was very happy, I felt like giving everybody around me a hug!  I've never heard about the guy he's playing next. It should be an easier match but I don't dare hope that it will be a heart attacks free match! Anyway, davai Marat in the next round!!! |

all i can say is OMG OMG OMG
i had such the best time, got to sit in the front row, took so many pics, so when i have time will post them and a report.
he is just to hot for words

I'M HAVING SKY!  Settled down to watch the match tonight. Didn't know the score ... during the first set, kept getting an error message from the SKY box. 'We're initialising your card'. F*** off, I'm in the middle of a match. (First set with Becker). 'There is a problem with your SKY card. Please call the administrator on ...' 'You're having me on? The first week of the AO?' Switched it off and on getting more and more hyper every time. >:(Messages came up about a dozen times in half an hour. Being VERY like Marat temperamentally, I almost put my foot through the screen by the fifth error message. It's a Bang and Olufsen telly. Held back thinking about the repair bill. Phoned up 911. Sorry, SKY. After hitting about 20 different buttons and being put on hold with these bampots - 'Switch it off and switch it back on,' was the technical support response. 'Done that ... and I'm mightily hacked off after half an hour of doing it. You do know it's the first week of the AO and I REALLY want to see the conclusion of this match?' 'Sorry about that. We'll have to cancel your card and send you a new one.' ''And that means?' 'YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO WATCH OR RECORD SKY FOR 5 TO 7 WORKING DAYS. SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.' 'YOU BAST***S!!! IT'S THE FIRST WEEK OF THE AO. YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!' 'We'll reimburse you for the lost week of course.' 'YOU BAST***S!!! IT'S THE FIRST WEEK OF THE AO. YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!' I'm really going to cry. From the ecstasy of knowing I'll see Borg in June ... to this. F***! NO AO for a whole week!!!  Big Yin, you better go all the way on this. I will not be able to see you play until probably next Tuesday!!! I am relying on you girls for detailed match reports. PS Brill that he got it in the end. A good test doesn't do any harm. Tests his nerve. And everybody elses. ;D Another PS Excuse the swearing. I'm really pissed off now. Marat, give me a few racquets mate. They need bounce tested. |

SAFIN SURVIVES THRILLING BATTLE Former champion Marat Safin came from two sets to one down to win a thrilling first-round encounter with Benjamin Becker at the Australian Open. Safin, the champion in Melbourne in 2005, dug deep to register a 5-7 7-6 (7/2) 3-6 6-3 6-4 win, the match finishing at 12.45am local time. The temperamental Russian must have known he was in for a long night on the Rod Laver Arena when he lost the first set. The mental side of his game was then fully tested when he failed to serve out the second set and, after a couple of racket-throwing incidents for which he is famed, was forced into a tie-break. He managed to level the match by Becker, who ended Andre Agassi's career with a shock win at last year's US Open, was unbowed and took the third set to leave Safin staring down the barrel. However, Safin was up for the challenge. He fought back in the fourth set and then grabbed the vital break in a nerve-jangling fifth game of the decider. That proved decisive and Safin sealed victory when Becker pushed a forehand wide. "He has a lot of respect from the players and he is a very tough opponent," said a relieved Safin. "I think we had a great match, he was up two sets to one and had his opportunities, but I guess I have a little bit more experience."
