Marat Safin moved into the second-round with a 6-4 7-5 win over Mardy Fish, who struggled with his serve throughout the match. The victory was particularly welcome for Safin, after a confidence destroying straight-sets defeat to world number 512 Wesley Whitehouse last week.
The former world number one was in a positive mood after the match. "I had one week to practise and managed to improve my fitness and get some rest. I'm much better. For the first round, this was pretty good” he declared.
