Safin has declined comment and was a no-show at the post press conference, the Russian preferring instead to pay a fine.

I just hope he's not going to put his head on a hole, telling himself awful things like "you're an awful player, etc, etc"... I don't think it was a nice thing to escape from the press conference... Of course when you lost you want to forget but that's also part of his job to do that kind of things and also sometimes it's not that bad to face the questions... For sure it's going on his nerves and i understand but i really wanted to know what he had to say...

carole, the report is great! Thank you so much! I can't say that I'm surprised, but it hurts so much. I expected it because of what Peter said about his knee and all the problems he had with twisted ankles and stuff! The whole training process is like a chain. When you break it all the time, it get harder to put it together. But the knee is ok now, I don't know what they did, but it works. He moved really well today. He showed us the arsenal of weapons he have, some really beautiful shots.......but then again error after error. He did really bad choices with the important points. It was really painful watching him like that...so sad, lost, without confidence. I'm not disappointed, I'm worried. Marat, today you show us a part of the magic only you can do on court. After RG you'll be ranked about 100. So what? The rhythm will come back after some practice. You've got your talent and no one can take it away from you. It will come to light when you put your mind at rest. Take your time, no matter how long is going to take! We are always there for you!!!!

Owwwwwwwwww. That was painful on so very many levels. Especially since he showed some good stuff and then took a nose dive. My husband bought me a 50" HD flat screen for our anniversary and it doesn't come until tomorrow. He sat there with me watching the match (I hate that!) just saying "pity pity pity", making fun of the bun and racket slamming and teasing me about him crying. Then he saw Marat do my pet peeve - the snot shot out of the nose. Agassi does that and it so grosses me out. Nevertheless, I'm still crazy about him, still love his game, and look forward to his next match. Of course now I have a deluxe TV and no Marat to watch. Wah Wah Wah!!! wait marat was crying?!?!?!?!

Thx Carole, your report is great What a gloomy Tuesday So many net approaches, I hate when he does that, especially on clay, coasted him a lot of important points in Hamburg already. Maybe it´s because he wants to prevent long rallyes to rest the knee He looked like crying when the 3-0 came, I felt like even Carlos Ramos felt painful to have to say the ball of Gonzales was good Bad, bad luck, to our talented Marat Hopefully he can contain himself soon again.

I'm happy that you loved the report! And as i said in it, yes i think he was crying or at least has tears near the eyes in the last set and to be honest : me, i was crying! Because he was so desperate... I feel like, i don't find the english word, but like when you come to a place with your heart open, with no defence, and when everything that happened can hurt you so strongly... Really i follow him since years and i haven't ever seen him like that... I guess he's not the kind of person who's crying easily, most of all not in front of a lot of people, so today if he did that means that he's really feeling down and that's why it made me cry: he was hopeless and nobody could help him, you know like when a child is lost somewhere and there's always someone to take him by the hand and put him in a safe place... There was nobody for Marat today...

thanx carole, really nice report! looking forward to seeing your pics. But he was fighting, he has lost the belief at the end but i don't think he gave up. He really tried but nothing was going his way. But these stupid mistakes on the advantage or BP points : OMG ! omg, those last games were so irritating-so many deuces and advantages...i think he was pretty tired, and that's why he seemed like losing his will at moments.. But, in all this sadness something great happened. It was 5-0, change over and Marat had the head in the hands, just to try to forget what was happening i guess! And then all the crowd started to yell his name, cheering for him ( we were doing it from the start but this time it was really huge). And it last until he walked on the court and then i'm nearly sure that Marat was really moved of that because he was puting his fingers in his eyes really strong, like when you feel the tears coming and just want to hold them... The people around me felt the same way and really it was a really moving moment... I'm sure his ego was dead to think of a 6-0! Then he broke back with everybody cheering and supporting him. Unfortunately he can't hold his serve and lost... And when he went out of the court, everybody was stooding up, applausing for him and on the screen we saw he made a bye bye sign and he was breathing hard with the shoulders going up and down and i'm sure he was again near the tears... i haven't seen that moment, with pressing his eyes, but he must have felt very sad and happy at the same time...he just looked so sad tonight...even not too pissed off...just in a huge disbelief, and hopelessly sad... And, i'm maybe wrong, but i've not seen him looking at Peter during the match... I don't want to judge Peter's work because he's a great coach but i don't know what his plans are to help Marat roght now but obviously they're not going in the right direction... Let's keep hope for the rest of the season! i don't know, but it seems that peter really likes marat and he understands him very well...he knows that forcing him too much can't be good if marat is not in a good mood...he can help him,but he can't change him...

Am I going to upset everyone here ... but I don't think he played badly at all. He seemed pretty focussed for most of the match. When he did lose points, it was when he 'loosened up' (what was that shot about between his knees at that point in the match?) There was only one racquet smash in the match. Jings. He even stopped the arm swinging routine. If he can keep his mind focussed, I think he'll peak - wait for it - at Wimbledon with some pretty classy play. Gonzalez is a clay court specialist - he's had a pretty good run lately, and is a bit of an outsider. I think Marat plays better on hard courts. If I was the boy, I wouldn't be disheartened. Sure it was disappointing to lose in the first round - but to a player like Gonzalez it shouldn't be a huge shock or disappointment. Chin up Marat. I thought you played very well - just keep the focus throughout - and for gawd's sake, don't play the ball between your legs. Leave that to eejits like me at match point!

I agree they have a great relationship and it was obvious during practice because Peter was really taking care of Marat for everything: rackets, drink, "aren't you feeling too cold" thing... But i don't know, that's just a feeling like even for Peter it's starting to get hard to find a solution.... And Marat, in the past, often looked in his box to cross peter's eyes and today i didn't notice... Maybe he knew by heart how awful he was playing and he didn't want to see Peter tell the same thing! Or maybe again he was not believing anything or anyone could help me this day...
