I found this ;D ;D ;D
Peter LUNDGREN: "MARAT HAS LEARNED NOT TO HURRY"
Aleksey TOLKACHEV from Indian Wells
The outgoing Swede Peter Lundgren doesn't resemble a tennis coach at all. The hippy ponytail in combination with the portliness for some reason causes other associations. In fact Lundgren is the man who helped Federer to become Federer. And now he is helping Safin to become the better version of himself. About this - and not only - in the interview of Peter Lundgren to the correspondent of SE.
- Marat traditionally arrives to play the American spring tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami with modest expectations. Why? And does this attitude satisfy you? - It’s always difficult to start, especially when you return after a long break. Marat doesn’t want "to load" himself with hope, and in my opinion this is a correct approach. By the way, he played quite well here. He played very well the first three matches, also, in the game against Nieminen he started well but then I don’t know what happened. Marat lost his entire arsenal.
- I agree that at the moment this approach makes sense for Safin but I mean that he arrives here year after year and from the start declares at the press conferences that he doesn’t expect great success. And so it usually happens. - You are right, he doesn’t like American hard. The condition here are not perfect for his style of play, to put it mildly.
- So there is nothing terrible in the fact that he arrives with the defeatist mood? - Well, I wouldn’t call it a defeatist mood! Certainly, there is nothing good if he is going to the court with the words: "Maybe I won’t play my best game today". He isn’t coming here for the first time and he has never had any success here. But whatever he might say, deep down he is hoping to play well and to astonish everyone. I don’t think he arrives here to lose.
- Actually he played pretty well, exceeded many expectations. - Including mine! Marat had a very complicated draw - Moya and Davydenko. I didn’t think he could get past the second-third round, and I am very glad that he achieved such results.
- Marat himself also seems to consider it as a success... - Yes, but to be defeated by Nieminen right now was quite bad. First, Marat can beat him, he has proved that more than once. Second, Nalbandian lost Srichaphan. The draw opened up for Marat, and he understood this before today's match. Maybe, this didn’t let him concentrate as needed. Anyway, life doesn’t end in the Californian desert. Next week we will again play tennis.
- Tell us about Safin’s plans for the near future. - First of all, we play these two tournaments on hard. Then we move on to the clay courts to get ready for the French Open. He has every chance to do well there.
- How far is Marat from his optimum form? Is he playing to 70 - 80 % of his abilities or better? - It’s difficult to evaluate. He is obviously playing on a very high level – except for today’s match, or some of it’s episodes, to be more precise. As a whole Marat is approaching 100 %.
- Do you agree with his decision about the injury treatment? - I think if Safin had the operation, then rehabilitation could have proven to be even longer. A doctor in Moscow said that it’s better to give the knee some rest, and Marat listened to his advice. By the way, we got a conclusion from another doctor as well just in case. And the third. This was the right decision. Better than he decision to play last summer after Wimbledon in Cincinnati. Then we hurried back too fast.
- Safin is saying that between the risk of unsuccessful operation and a constant but tolerable pain in the knee he chose the latter. - Well, I hope that he is exaggerating. It will hurt at the beginning when the muscles are not worked out and the inflammation is still there. I think that once Marat has strengthened the leg muscles everything will be fine. He is too pessimistic in this case (laughs).
- How much time have you past with Marat in the recent months? - I arrived in Moscow for a week, then we went to Spain for a month for fitness training. This was in December. In January we started with tennis - also in Spain. Consider that I was with him almost all the time. Marat could rest from me only first three months when he could not do anything.
- Do you like to come Moscow? - I was in your capital five or six times but I would like to come more often.
- They say that this time it was very hard to find Marat in Moscow. - He tried to lead as quiet life as possible, followed all the doctor’s orders, had physical therapy. One could say he was hiding.
- It is no secret that Marat has certain reputation. mainly because he tried to have fun in his life and didn’t hide it. As far as I know Safin is tired from the labels and bad reputation and wants to be taken seriously. - You are absolutely right. The way he was when he was young is different. It has nothing to do with the present Marat.
- What do you consider young? - Nineteen, twenty... twenty one, twenty two... Yes, he likes to go to the restaurant, to have fun. Everyone knows it. Marat likes this kind of life. But this behavior is incompatible with today's tennis, and he perfectly understands this. He grew up and got smarter, he doesn’t press the gas as he used to. Now he lives like the majority of "normal" tennis players. He plays a match, has supper and goes to bed.
- Do you think you have had a positive effect on him? - I’ve worked with him two years and I can say that even in this time he has changed for the best a lot. He knew all this also without me but I said: "Marat, you have five-six years left. Play them 100% and then do whatever you want ". He is listening, becoming more experienced. No one likes to listen to criticism all their life. Especially if your only fault is that once you were twenty one years old.

Thanks Yse ;D. There seems to be a real relationship between Marat and Peter and a mutual respect. More than just coach and player. I think this has probably proved invaluable to Marat
