Safin returns with stunning win
Safin was unable to defend his Aussie Open title in January
Marat Safin marked his long-awaited comeback from a knee injury with a hugely impressive win over second seed Nikolay Davydenko in Dubai on Tuesday.
The former US and Australian Open champion was playing for the first time since the Cincinnati Masters in August.
And after struggling early on against fellow Russian Davydenko, Safin found his range with some huge hitting as he powered to a 4-6 6-2 6-2 victory.
Top seeds Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are in action later on Tuesday.
"It's tough when you're out for so long to come back and play at the top level, especially when you play someone from the top 10, so I did pretty well," said Safin.
"I was surprised I could move without any problems. I served pretty well and did my job pretty good."
